About Supercopa Argentina
The Supercopa Argentina is a recently created tournament hosted by the Argentine Football Association. The first edition of this tournament took place in 2012. It is played by the Superliga Argentina champions and the winners of the Argentine Cup. If the same team wins the championship in both tournaments, the league runners-up are awarded a spot in this competition.
This competition is a one-match affair, played at a neutral venue, with penalties used to determine the winner if the draw prevails after 90 minutes. Curiously, only two editions of this competition have been decided via a penalty shootout, and both of them had Boca Juniors involved.
Another interesting fact about this competition is that it had a different champion in the first seven years since its creation. Arsenal, Vélez, Huracán, San Lorenzo, Lanús, River Plate and Boca Juniors all claimed an Argentine Supercup match each.
Did you know? It took four attempts for Boca Juniors to finally be crowned champions of the Supercopa Argentina, in 2018. Los Xeneizes had finished second best an unprecedented three times prior to that, in 2012, 2015 and 2017.
