About FA Women's Cup

The FA Women's Cup is the cup competition for English women's football clubs. Equivalent to the FA Cup contested by the men's football clubs in England, the single-elimination knockout tournament is organized by the Women's Football Association (WFA). It was founded in 1970 and began as the Mitre Challenge Trophy with 71 clubs - some from Scotland and Wales - competing for the title. A rebrand in 1993 saw the competition adopting its new name.

The format for the FA Women's Cup trophy has undergone changes over the years as it previously included a group stage that preceded the knockout round. After the format of the women's top-flight league was reformed in 2015, the number of teams eligible to feature in the cup competition was increased to 72. The participating teams are from the FA Women's National League (Northern and Southern divisions as well as the four regional Division One leagues).

The teams are drawn against each other in the determining round and the winners progress to either the preliminary round or straight into the First Round of the competition. 32 teams feature in the first round. This is subsequently followed by three other rounds, the Round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and the final.

Relatively, losers of the determining round are drawn into a preliminary round to compete for the National League Plate, another single-elimination knockout tournament founded by the FA Women's National League (WNL) in 2014.
