MEGA Channel history, coverage, features
Mega, also known as Mega TV, is a Greek television channel that is owned and operated by the Alter Ego Mass Media company. The channel was launched on November 20, 1989 as the first private television channel in the country, but financial issues experienced by its parent company forced the network to shut down its operations on October 28, 2018. Eventually, an auction was held to find new owners for the channel, and Mega was relaunched on February 17, 2020.
Over the years, Mega has been known for its wide variety of entertainment programs, which have included soap operas, tv series, reality shows, comedy programs, game shows, magazine shows, sports broadcasts, and more. While most of the content aired by this channel is broadcast in Greek, there are some shows that have been aired in English language, especially movies.
Speaking about sports, Mega has focused its efforts on airing football competitions. The channel has aired UEFA Champions League games and UEFA Super Cup matches. Added to that, Mega has also aired content related to cup competitions such as the Taca de Portugal, the FA Cup, and certain editions of the Coppa Italia.
Mega was launched back in 1989 as a Standard Definition channel, but once the channel was relaunched in 2019, the network dropped the SD feed in favor of a High-Definition channel, which is available in most of the Greek territory. Users who are not able to watch this channel in HD may be treated to a downscaled version of the HD option.
