About

Galavision history, coverage, features

Galavisión is a Spanish-language pay-TV sports channel in the United States. It is owned by Univision Communications Inc., the Manhattan-based company operating Univision, UniMás, TUDN and dozens of local TV and radio stations in multiple U.S. states.

Galavisión debuted on television in April 1979. At first, its main focus was on offering entertainment content in Spanish from Hollywood and Mexico. As the channel matured, its programs branched out to meet the needs of a wider audience, following the introduction of new TV shows, news programming and sports.

In June 2010, Galavisión HD was launched and made available on Dish Network. The 1080i high definition channel was added to DirecTV’s listings in 2013, subsequent to a multi-year agreement between the network’s parent company and the satellite provider. The 1080i channel was eventually added to the distribution list of DIRECTV NOW, after the AT&T-owned streaming service launched in November 2016.

Though Galavisión may be more popular for its variety of telenovelas, comedy and reality shows, it has still participated over the years in the coverage of international football competitions. In 2002, Galavisión aired 25 matches from the Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup in Spanish language, whereas sister networks Univision and TeleFutura—the latter was renamed to UniMás in 2012—combined for the live telecast of all 64 games.

In 2006, Galavisión again took part in the FIFA World Cup coverage from Germany, offering same-day delayed broadcasts in prime time for matches previously aired live on either Univision or TeleFutura. It had similar coverage for the South African 2010 FIFA World Cup four years later, when it was used to supplement Univision’s dedicated programming with match replays. Galavisión provided 29 matches as repeat telecasts at 9:30pm Eastern Time and Pacific Time, and at 8:30pm Central Time between June 11 and July 9.

In 2014, Galavisión continued with its re-broadcasts of matches in prime time for the Brazil World Cup; however, the games were aired in 60-minute format through a Spanish-language program called “Copa Mundial en 60,” meaning “World Cup in 60” in English. But Galavisión also stepped up its coverage that year, participating in direct transmission of matches with eight live games. Other international FIFA tournaments Galavisión has covered in the past includes the FIFA U17 World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The channel was a major broadcaster for both tournaments’ 2011 editions, with exclusive Spanish-language telecasts of multiple fixtures, including their respective opening games.

Live streaming is also available on Univision NOW, the official streaming service providing simulcasts and on-demand streaming for Univision’s family of channels. The service is available on the web for PC and Mac and on mobile devices via dedicated iOS and Android apps.
