ETB 1 history, coverage, features
ETB 1 is the first channel from the Basque Community. It is owned and operated by Euskal Telebista, who launched the channel on December 31, 1982 on its test face, which was later confirmed on February 16, 1983 as its official launch date. The channel is available on all the Basque Community and surrounding territories such as Navarra, Burgos, Aragón, and even the French Basque cities. This channel became the first in history to broadcast all of its content in Basque language.
ETB 1 is considered a general entertainment channel. The network’s grid has offered news shows, magazine programs, TV series, animated content, movies, cultural programs, sports broadcasts, and even religious programs.
Speaking about sports, ETB 1 has focused its broadcasts on football, with special attention to the performances of La Liga clubs in both the domestic competitions and in European tournaments. The channel has covered these tournaments with their regular sports-related shows, and occasional games have also been broadcast live or hours after its original broadcast.
ETB 1 started out with a Standard Definition format, but an HD feed was added to the Spanish TDT on December 21, 2016. This new feed replaced the now defunct ETB HD, which showed a mix of shows from ETB 1 and ETB 2, one of the network’s sister channels.
