ESPN Australia history, coverage, features
ESPN Australia is an English-language sports channel available in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands. It was launched in Australian territory on September 19, 1995 as Sports ESPN. It is a subsidiary of ESPN, Inc, which is owned by the Walt Disney Company.
Most like its American counterpart, ESPN Australia has focused its content on broadcasting American sports such as baseball, football, and basketball. As years have gone by, ESPN Australia has also offered soccer broadcasts, rugby games, motor racing, extreme sports, poker, tennis, college football, and eSports.
ESPN Australia scored its largest audience on a NFL game held on September 15, 2015. The game featured Australian player Jarrid Hayne’s debut, with over 116,000 fans watching the broadcast.
Speaking about football, ESPN Australia has broadcast the following tournaments in the past: FA Cup, World Cup Qualifiers, Major League Soccer games, National Women’s Soccer League, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and the Toulon tournament, to name a few.
ESPN Australia became one of the first channels in this country to offer HD quality in their broadcasts, when ESPN HD was launched in June 2008. The service was made available in New Zealand on June 2, 2011. Select pay-tv carriers in both countries offer an SD feed as well. Check local listings and availability with your pay-tv company of choice for further details.
