About Canvas

Canvas is a Belgian television channel owned and operated by VRT. The channel was launched on December 1, 1997, as a second channel to Één. The channel shared its space with Ketnet until 2012 when both channels were awarded their own broadcasting space.

This network can be considered as a general entertainment channel, with in-depth news, documentaries, arthouse films, cultural programming, children’s shows, non-mainstream entertainment shows, and current affairs’ programming. Furthermore, the channel offers sports programming at the weekends under the name Sporza.

Most of the sports covered on this channel have been funded with tax money, although other competitions have also been aired on this channel over the years. Disciplines such as football, cycling, and gymnastics have found a spot in the channel’s programming as time has gone by.

Speaking about football, Canvas/Sporza have aired tournaments such as the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Euro, the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and other competitions such as the UEFA European U-21 Championship and the U-17 and U-20 FIFA World Cups.

Canvas was launched as an analog channel, but it later evolved into a Standard Definition feed over the years. Later, the channel added a High Definition feed. The channel has provided a downscaled version of the HD channel for those users who have not been able to switch to the HD feed.
