About
VRT 1 history, coverage, features
Eén is a Dutch-spoken television channel from Belgium, which is owned and operated by VRT. This channel was launched back in 1953 as NIR TV, but it would be renamed in 1960 to BRT. That name would stick until 1977, when it was once again renamed as BRT1. Another rebranding would take place in 1990, when it would acquire the name TV1 until 2005, when Eén was adopted as the channel’s name on January 21, 2005.
This television station has been compared over the years to BBC One and French channel La Une, since they were the first channels to be launched in those countries. Eén has focused on airing drama shows, entertainment programs, news, current affairs, TV series, and sports.
This channel has aired some of the top football competitions as years have gone by, including the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. In fact, the broadcast with the highest rating in the channel’s history featured the Belgian National Football team against France in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when over 2.5 million people tuned in to watch the semi-final between these teams.
Eén was launched as an analog channel back in the 1950s, but it later evolved to a Standard Definition feed as time went by. In 2013, the network began broadcasting all its content in HD, while also providing a downscaled version of this feed to users who have not been able to switch to HD technology.
