ČT2 History, Coverage, Features
CT2 is a Czech public television channel owned and operated by Česká televise. The channel was launched on May 10, 1970 under the name CST2. That name would be changed in 1990, when its parent company rebranded it to CTV. After just three years, CTV became CT2 in 1993 and has carried that name ever since.
During its earlier years, CT2 was an alternative channel to CT1, the first and most important television channel in the Czech Republic. It aired shows aimed at a wider audience, such as tv series, movies, documentaries, and sports. In recent years, CT2 has turned into a high-brow channel, aiming its content to a more mature audience and leaving popular shows behind. Movies, documentaries and sports have still been made available to its users, but not as the primary option for this network.
Speaking about sports, CT2 has aired content for some of the most relevant sports events in the world, such as the Olympic Games, the UEFA European Championship, or the FIFA World Cup. Sports coverage on this channel has been labeled as an overflow option to CT Sport, the company’s main sports network.
CT2 was launched as a Standard Definition channel and in black and white during its early days. The first change came in 1973, when it switched to color television. In the 21st Century, a High-Definition feed was added to give users a more thorough experience. Both feeds may still be available to watch in certain regions of the country.
