Every four years, a nation is crowned at the FIFA World Cup. In 2014, there are 32 teams sharing the same ambition – some are simple dreamers while others are genuine title contenders.

As much as football is full of surprises, it is quite difficult to separate the pretenders from the contenders. Countries like Argentina and Germany have very good squads on paper but the World Cup trophy has escaped them in the last two decades.

History will be written in Brazil and the hosts are favourites to lift the trophy in front of their home supporters. However, current world champions Spain have promised to defend their title.

Africans have generally flopped on the big stage at senior level. This time, the continent is represented by Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast and 2013 AFCON champions Nigeria. The hot Brazilian weather might favour CAF’s teams.

Meanwhile, sides from CONCACAF and Asia are also hoping to break away from the shadow of European and South American footballing countries. The road has been long for each of the countries represented in Brazil 2014.
