Will Sami Trabelsi enjoy success after seeing his team struggle to reach Gabon-Equatorial Guinea as runners-up behind surprise-package Botswana? Tunisia are among the few giants present at the 2012 AFCON. We take a look at the history in the Nations Cup.
Tunisia’s history in brief
At a number of occasions, Tunisia went very close to achieving their dream of conquering Africa. They finished third in 1962 and clinched silver medals twice; in 1965 and in 1996. But CAN 2004 produced Tunisia’s best memory in the history of the Nations Cup.
It was a host and win situation for the Eagles of Carthage. After successfully avoiding defeat against Guinea, Rwanda and Congo DR in the group stages, the Tunisians faced Senegal in the quarterfinals.
The Lions of Teranga (Les Lions de la Teranga in French) are potentially dangerous. They are among the world’s top 50 nations and 6th in Africa. They are coached by Amara Traore and captained by veteran striker Mamadou Niang. The book of the Senegalese national team’s AFCON adventures is eventful and full of historic moments. You just can’t disregard Senegal’s importance in the history of African football.
A colorful history
Senegal’s first taste of the Nations Cup was in 1965 when they finished fourth behind Ivory Coast. Their next best shot at the competition was in 1992 and in 1994 when they reached the quarterfinals.
The Moroccans are referred to as the Lions of the Atlas. They are ranked 61st in the world according to FIFA. The national team is currently managed by Eric Gerets—once PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, Galatasaray and Olympique Marseille coach. 29-year-old Serie A midfielder, Houssine Kharja, acts as the team’s captain.
In this profile, you will understand why the Moroccans should not only consider themselves as one of Northern Africa’s best footballing country but also as one of the entire continent’s most dangerous side. Let’s look back at Morocco’s AFCON history!
They are 18th in Africa and 80th overall according to the FIFA Rankings, they are not considered as one of the continent’s main forces and they don’t even have World Cup memories to boast about. However, the National Elephants have a bigger Nations Cup history than many may recall. In this recap, we bring to mind the various highlights and lowlights of the Guinean national team—controlled by the Fédération Guinéenne de Football and currently managed by Michel Dussuyer.
Guinea’s eventful past
Let’s go way back to the year 1970. That’s when the National Elephants finally experienced African up of Nations football. Seven years before, they got disqualified from Ghana 1963 for failing to provide neutral officials in the second leg of their 3-2 aggregate tie against Nigeria in the qualifiers.
FIFA U-20 World Cup tournaments have strongly contributed in the growth of world football’s top stars. Former U-20 stars Diego Maradona (winner of the Golden Ball in Japan 1979), Javier Saviola, Lionel Messi or Sergio Aguero can confirm this fact.
The U-20 World Cup competition, which was founded in 1977, has seen countries like Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Germany among others top the best performances list. This only makes it hard for one to question the success of those countries’ senior national teams or senior footballers.
This year, it will be no different. The quarter-final stage at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be contested by Portugal, Argentina, Mexico, hosts Colombia, France, Nigeria, Brazil and Spain. With all players involved sharing the unique dream of reaching higher standards individual and collectively in their career, August 13 and August 14’s fixtures promise to be very competitive.
Nigeria are set to fulfill their friendly match contract against Argentina by locking horns one more time later this year. Coach Samson Siasia confirmed the news as SuperSport reported him as saying:
Just as it’s about to kick-off, Live Soccer TV presents you with an educative trip around the 4 sections—from Group A to Group D. To start, we commence with Group A!
Group A: Germany, Canada, Nigeria, France
It contains the host nation, Germany. Die Nationalelf is of course the most successful nation in Women’s Football—having won the 2 last editions of the World Cup convincingly. The Germans will commence the defense of their title against Canada on June 26.
Despite carrying a poor World Cup history, 2010 Women’s Gold Cup titleholders Canada will be looking to upset Germany. Note that Canada have been granted the right to host the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The impossible: Yakubu's miss is never to be forgotten
1-0 and 2-1 defeats to Argentina and Greece earlier in the tournament stopped the Super Eagles from securing a position in the last 16, in the early stages of the first round. Nigeria were striving to triumph over the Asian favorites, knowing that it was their last opportunity to reach the second round of the competition.
Somehow, all seemed to go well for the Africans as they stole a vital early opener in the first half through Kalu Uche. A nice cross from the right-hand side found Uche who, after coming out from nowhere, blasted the ball home to put Nigeria in front 1-0.
Nigeria vs Korea Republic, First Half: Neck To Neck
An early opportunity for South Korea put the Nigerians on their guard. The Super Eagles woke up from their passivity with more dynamism and aggression on the ball. The player that had to deal with his temper was Ayila, who was lucky to escape without a booking after making two illegal fouls on the Koreans.
But the moment for Nigeria to put to bed their anxiety wasn’t far away. Odiah kept his composure to effect an excellent cross and Uche didn’t fail to make something out of it. The striker stretched his foot to tap the ball into the net and therefore lift the spirit of Nigerian fans in the stadium as the Super Eagles were then ahead by a goal to nil.
Africa lost one of its six hopes last week as Cameroon became the first nation to crash out from the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Will the Super Eagles of Nigeria follow the Indomitable Lions in their den or spread their wings and fly in the blue sky with Diego Maradona’s already-qualified Albicelestes?
Group B – Explanations
Argentina – 6 points, +4
---------------------------------------
Korea Republic – 3 points, -1
Greece – 3 points, -1
Nigeria – 0 point, -2
Argentina comfortably qualified into the Last 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They are safe and can even opt to lose on Tuesday night. The battle for survival is between the Korea Republic, Greece, and Nigeria. Any of these three teams could join Argentina in the Round of 16 and here are mathematical analyses of Group B.
Greece vs Nigeria, First Half: Sani Kaita disrupts the Super Eagles’ flight
A game concentrated in the midfield and only few shots on goal – none of them showing so much intent. That’s what the public was exposed to during the first fifteen minutes of the game. But when Peter Odemwingie was brought down through a professional foul committed by Papastathopoulos who eventually saw yellow, there was a sensation that something was going to happen.
Indeed, Uche turned into a miracle maker as he curled in a teasing free-kick from 30 yards out on the left. Peter Odemwingie also played a great role in Nigeria’s opener as he fooled Greece’s goalkeeper by faking a header inside the 6-yard box as the ball flew over everyone and into the net: 1-0 to Nigeria; quite the starts they were looking for.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles To Be Crashed Down To The Ground?
"Nobody expected us to beat Argentina. Nothing's changed. We just have to prepare ourselves right and go and play with the same heart and desire."
That is what Nigeria’s Etuhu said following is side’s opening match defeat to Diego Maradona’s Argentina. So the boys from ‘Naija’, as their country is nicknamed, are set to bounce back on Match-day Two with a victory over Greece.
Nigeria could be the first African country to bow out from the 2010 FIFA World Cup competition in the first round, and this is a horrible fate the country and its national football team won’t be able to tolerate. In other words, such a reality will be a real nightmare.
Group B - The favorites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
Argentina
The South Americans are the team in Group B with the most chances of progressing to the next round of the tournament, despite their imperfections. Los Albicelestes showed real struggle in their qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup, but vital wins toward the end of the process sent them to the promise land in South Africa. With their names stamped in the finals, the Argentines now have high hopes of showing their fierce side, which of course they could do through the likes of their world-class players. The group of men appointed to uplift the Argentina team in a heroic manner include reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, Manchester City star Carlos Tevez, and midfield maestro Juan Veron. With the type of players that Los Albicelestes have, it is understandable that Maradona's side will be tipped as clear favorites to progress from Group B.
Nigeria – The country, the football
The Federal Republic of Nigeria, better known as Nigeria, is a West African country which is bordered by Benin, Chad, Cameroon, and Niger. Its coasts are also stretched out to the Gulf of Guinea, and to the Atlantic Ocean.
Nigeria – which has a total area of around 973,768 km2 – is the most populated territory on the African continent, and it is globally ranked in 8th position with an estimated population of about 154,729,000 people.
Since 1934 – the first time an African nation participated in the World Cup – the Black Continent has not managed to rise up against the world. The record is mediocre with Cameroon and Senegal currently sharing the best record thanks to their quarter-final finish back in 1990 and 2002 respectively.
76 years after Africa first graced the world stage, the planet’s most prestigious sporting event will take place in Africa for the first ever time in the history of football. African nations now have a great advantage best called the home advantage. But will they make the most of it?
The world will watch as Africa will fight to gain its pride against the titans from Europe and South America and the outsiders from Asia. After multiple attempts, what have African nations learned from their failures? What kind of football will they offer to the world? Is the year 2010 going to be a turning point in the history of soccer?
Everyone was expecting a footbalistic explosion in Johannesburg, but Argentina has only been able to claim the three points with the minimum difference. Lionel Messi created many goal opportunities but his lack of efficiency was determinant for the squad to suffer until the last moment before celebrating a victory.

A huge step for Argentina
Argentina has a clean sheet on its confrontations with African teams, having won 75% of the matches played against teams of the Black Country. Two years ago these two teams took on each other to define Beijing's Olympic Games, in which Argentina claimed the gold medal. This was a response to the Atlanta '96 match which ended with glory for Nigeria. Two years ago Angel Di Maria scored the winning goal, something he'll be looking forward to repeating for this world's debut.
Maradona has the team almost confirmed. Sergio Romero will be the man between the posts, and after having chosen four full-centrals to guard the back line, team's coach finally decided to force Jonas Gutierrez to lead Argentina's right band both in the attack and defense. Walter Samuel and Martin Demichellis will occupy the center of the area, with Nicolas Otamendi filling the last place. This is a classic 4-4-2 formation with a twist, for Gutierrez's versatility offers the team the opportunity to advance as a 3-3-2-2.
