Despite being one of Africa's most successful World Cup teams, Cameroon have crashed out in the group stages all but once as they prepare for their seventh appearance, in Brazil

A glorious yet deceiving history

The African nation of Cameroon have a rich history in football's most glorious tournament, the World Cup. They have qualified for the competition six times, the most out of any African country, making appearances in 1982, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2010, with the 2014 competition in Brazil being their seventh. The Indomitable Lions were also the first African nation to make the tournament's last-eight stage, during the time of legend Roger Milla, reaching the quarter-finals in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

However, FIFA world number-50 ranked nation made it past the group stages only once as Cameroon failed to qualify for the round of 16 five times, with their outcome in Brazil yet to be decided.

Cameroon's journey to Brazil

The Indomitable Lions' path to Brazil was successful as Cameroon topped their group in the qualifying rounds, beating Libya, Congo, and Togo to the play-offs spot with 12 points out of six games. They were drawn against Tunisia, where they played two fixtures to decide the team moving on to Brazil, and after a first leg goalless draw, the seven-time World Cup qualifiers booked their ticket to South America by beating Tunisia 4-1 in the second leg at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo.

Eto'o to the rescue

Grouped with the host nation Brazil, alongside Croatia and Mexico, Cameroon will be looking to their European based players to see the Indomitable Lions through the group stages for what would be only the second time in their history.

Captain and former Blaugrana and Nerazzurri striker Samuel Eto'o is expected to be the African nation's source of goals, having won numerous trophies in Spain and Italy. He will also be aided in attack by Fenerbahce striker Achille Webo, with Barcelona's Alex Song being trusted with the title of midfield maestro.

A look at Volker Finke

Cameroon's head coach, Volker Finke, is the man in charge of the Indomitable Lions' World Cup campaign. Taking over as boss in May 2013, the German manager has coaching experience in Germany and Japan, managing Urawa Reds for two years. However, the World Cup is challenge of a different level and will require the coach to guide the national side to performances of new heights.

The final squad

Cameroon look to rely on their players that feature across the European leagues as Finke named a 28-man provisional squad consisting of stars from the English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Super Lig, etc, with Eto'o, Song, Mbia, Nkoulou, Webo, and Chedjou all expected to make the final cut for Brazil.
