Austria vs Greece Preview

Tuesday November 16 2010,
Tags: Greece, Austria, International Friendly
Austria and Greece lock horns at the Ernst Happel Stadion on Wednesday as two in-form teams meet.
Austria are in the midst of a three-match unbeaten run, while Greece have not lost under new coach Fernando Santos in five matches, ever since the Portuguese manager succeeded Otto Rehhagel after the 2010 World Cup.

While this is only an international friendly and not a competitive fixture, for the teams’ managers Dietmar Constantini and Santos this match represents the final time this calendar year they can gather their sides together.

Both countries have made bright starts to their EURO 2012 qualifying campaigns. In Group 1, Austria have command of 2nd place at the moment with 7 points from 3 matches, a point ahead of Turkey and with a match in hand. Germany have seized control of the group right from the start with a maximum 12 points from their first 4 matches.

Greece Super League Report: Week 10 (Nov 13-15)

Sunday November 14 2010,
Panathinaikos joined Olympiakos at the top of the Greek Super League in strange circumstances this weekend with their 1-1 home draw against Larisa.
The result however was not enough to save the job of Nikos Nioplias who left the team on Monday in a mutual decision between the coach and the club. Panathinaikos’ point against Larisa was enough to see them reach 21 points, the same as their bitter rivals.

Olympiakos however have a match in hand, or half a match at least as their game against Ergotelis was abandoned before the start of the second half due to a waterlogged pitch with the score 0-0. The Greek Super League will now arrange for that match to be finished at a later date.

PAOK recorded a fine 2-1 victory over AEK thanks to an injury-time strike by Portuguese winger Vierinha. The victory moved PAOK into 3rd spot with 17 points and dropped AEK to 4th place (16 points). Elsewhere, Atromitos scored a huge victory in a relegation duel against Panionios winning 1-0, Andreas Tatos with the solitary strike. Kerkyra and Xanthi played out a 1-1 draw to round out action on Saturday.

On Monday, three matches took place with the highest profile being the Thessaloniki derby where Iraklis defeated Aris 1-0. Kavala managed to secure a big away win with their 1-0 victory over Asteras Tripolis while Panserraikos and Olympiakos Volos played out a 2-2 draw.

Friday November 5 2010,
Panathinaikos’ 2-1 win over Olympiakos in week 7 of Greek Super League action narrowed the gap at the top of the standings to one point ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.
League leaders Olympiakos (18 points) had the opportunity to go 7 points clear had they won Greece’s Classico, but that defeat means that this is yet another title race that could go the distance. Panathinaikos face a short trip to Atromitos this weekend in hopes of keeping up their challenge at the top. Olympiakos meanwhile host a resurgent Panionios side looking to climb out of the league cellar.

AEK hope to rebound from defeat to Panionios last weekend with a home match against Ergotelis. Elsewhere, PAOK face a tricky trip to Kavala while promoted sides Olympiakos Volos and Kerkyra face-off in a battle of this season’s surprise teams.

Greece vs Israel Preview

Tuesday October 12 2010,
Tags: Greece, Israel, Euro 2012 Qualifying
On Tuesday, Israel must conquer Greece to recover what they lost against Croatia last week. Group F’s Greece vs Israel match presents a mid-table clash in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.
Benayoun’s absence perhaps played a part in Israel’s defeat to Croatia last Friday, but whatever the excuses, Tuesday’s visitors just want to find back the rhythm which saw them kick off their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign on a high. The fact here is that they are 4th in Group F’s six-team section.

Of course, the table is yet to be decided with quite a few number of draws between contenders tightening things up. Croatia certainly have the right to confidently dream of Poland-Ukraine, but both Greece and Israel can’t seat back. Surprisingly, they are behind second-placed Georgia.

However, they stand an equal chance of moving above the middle zone, if Georgia drop points against Latvia in the night’s other Euro 2012 qualifying match.

Greece vs Latvia Preview

Friday October 8 2010,
Tags: Greece, Latvia, Euro 2012 Qualifying
The Pirate Ship hasn’t sunk yet, but its adventure in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign isn’t great so far. Greece will need to get things right against Latvia on Friday night…
To have an unbeaten record is always a positive sign, and that’s something which the Greek possess presently. However, they still need to click as a team on the field of play – especially in attack. Spiropoulos is the only name on Greece’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign goal scoring sheet as Croatia denied them from breaking the deadlock in Zagreb on match-day two. But, this goal scoring issue will have to change when they host Latvia this week.

Table statistics read that the competition in Group F is still wide open although bottom and sixth-placed Malta don’t look as realistic contenders at all. Well, Greece seat just above them in fifth with 2 points like Georgia with who they drew when they opened their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign back in September.

Meanwhile, Latvia took their chances against Malta to bounce back from a thumping 3-0 home defeat against Croatia. The Euro 2004 participants therefore have a mathematical advantage over the Greeks as they occupy the third spot in Group F.

Confirmed: Israel To Play Croatia And Greece Without Yossi Benayoun

Thursday October 7 2010,
Tags: Israel, Croatia, Greece, Euro 2012 Qualifying, Yossi Benayoun
Israel will be without their skipper, Yossi Benayoun, for their Euro 2012 qualifying matches against Croatia and Greece. The news has been confirmed.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder picked up a calf injury in Chelsea’s 4-3 defeat to Newcastle in the Carling Cup last month. Benayoun had to limp off the field but earlier assessments explained he could have been fit to feature for Israel against Croatia on Saturday, October 9. Based on that, Coach Luis Fernandez opted to name the captain in his squad for the country’s upcoming Euro 2012 qualifying matches.

However, the Israel Football Association has finally confirmed bad news for both Israel and Yossi Benayoun’s Chelsea. The player will have to spend his time on the sidelines for many months to come, reports explained. Benayoun has actually sustained a new injury besides the calf injury which he picked up a few weeks ago.

Euro 2012 Qualifying – Croatia vs Greece Match Preview

Sunday September 5 2010,
Tags: Euro 2012 Qualifying, Croatia, Greece
A clean sheet and three goals at the other end of the pitch against Latvia set Croatia onto a perfect start in the Euro 2012 qualifying phase. Greece, meanwhile, dropped points at home to Georgia.

GekasSo what will happen when Croatia will play Greece at the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb? Which of these two teams will pause its Euro 2012 qualifying campaign on a positive note before it resumes in October?

When Greece hosted Georgia on the opening day, they couldn’t quite make the most of their home advantage. Nikos Spiropoulos saved his side from losing as his 72nd minute equalizer cancelled Iashvili’s 3rd minue goal. Still, this wasn’t enough for the Greeks to be content with the result as Coach Fernando Santos explained:

“We weren’t expecting such a result [against Georgia]. What looked to work alright during training didn’t materialize on the pitch. We conceded an early goal, and I think this is what made us nervous and anxious. It was hard for us to control the game.”

Argentina 2 - 0 Greece - FIFA World Cup 2010 Report

Tuesday June 22 2010,
Tags: FIFA World Cup, Argentina, Greece, Group B
Greece's "Anti-Messi" strategy, broken thanks to Angel Di Maria and Javier Pastore, was not enough for the Hellenics to join Argentina to the round of 16.
Argentina had a hard time against Greece as it looked almost impossible to get through the packed European defense. Maradona's alternative players offered security in the back line, with a great match for Nicolas Otamendi and Clemente Rodriguez, but will this be enough for them to take over Jonas Gutierrez's place? Martin Demichellis was unable to beat Georgios Samaras most of the times, but at the same time his aerial expertise gave Argentina the first goal, and completely changed the course of the last 15 minutes of the game. The Albiceleste dominated the game with 81% ball possession, forcing the Hellenic squad to make over 15 fouls. From the last minutes we expect to see Javier Pastore more frequently on the fields, as he was responsible for taking some of Messi's personal defense, offering Lio spaces from where to let his magic flow. On Sunday Argentina will face Mexico, will history repeat at the fourth match of Argentina in this competition?

Two new St. Martins for Argentina's Bicentennial

As the Liberator of South America did 200 years ago, Martin Demichellis and Martin Palermo joined the Illustrious Pantheon of Argentina's history by confirming once again the Albiceleste is indeed a solid candidate for the title. Greece's defenders were suffocating Messi from the first moment, as two or three Europeans kept constant watch of Blaugrana's striker every move. Juan Sebastian Veron was unable to drive the ball towards Argentina's strikers, and it was only thanks first to Di Maria and most importantly to young Palermo's Javier Pastore that the spaces were found where it was thought to be none.

With seven modifications, Maradona will be looking forward to claim the first position with a perfect score. Greece will go for an offensive formation to break Argentina's relatively weak defense. Will this be enough to earn the Olympics a place in the next stage?

10 days have passed since the opening game of this competition, and from that moment on Argentina's confidence has only grown larger and larger. Gonzalo Higuain is the top striker of this competition with three goals, while Gabriel Heinze has been an unexpected nightmare for most of his rivals. Lionel Messi, yet unable to taste the net has been the successful commander of Argentina's cruise and might even become the captain due to Javier Mascherano's absence.

Greece have won their first ever points in a World Cup by triumphing over the Super Eagles of Nigeria on a 2-1 score line. Uche put the Africans ahead through a free-kick, but Sani Kaita's moment of madness offered the Greeks a perfect opportunity to shine...

Greece players celebrate as they equalize Nigeria's goal.Greece vs Nigeria, First Half: Sani Kaita disrupts the Super Eagles’ flight

A game concentrated in the midfield and only few shots on goal – none of them showing so much intent. That’s what the public was exposed to during the first fifteen minutes of the game. But when Peter Odemwingie was brought down through a professional foul committed by Papastathopoulos who eventually saw yellow, there was a sensation that something was going to happen.

Indeed, Uche turned into a miracle maker as he curled in a teasing free-kick from 30 yards out on the left. Peter Odemwingie also played a great role in Nigeria’s opener as he fooled Greece’s goalkeeper by faking a header inside the 6-yard box as the ball flew over everyone and into the net: 1-0 to Nigeria; quite the starts they were looking for.

Match-day One’s two losers in Group B, Greece and Nigeria, will lock horns in a must-win game for both sides on Thursday, June 17. The venue is the Free Stat Stadium in Bloemfontein, and kick-off time is at 14:00 GMT.

Nigeria's Yakubu Aiyegbeni on the ground with Argentina's Gabriel Heinze.Nigeria’s Super Eagles To Be Crashed Down To The Ground?

"Nobody expected us to beat Argentina. Nothing's changed. We just have to prepare ourselves right and go and play with the same heart and desire."

That is what Nigeria’s Etuhu said following is side’s opening match defeat to Diego Maradona’s Argentina. So the boys from ‘Naija’, as their country is nicknamed, are set to bounce back on Match-day Two with a victory over Greece.

Nigeria could be the first African country to bow out from the 2010 FIFA World Cup competition in the first round, and this is a horrible fate the country and its national football team won’t be able to tolerate. In other words, such a reality will be a real nightmare.

Tags: Group B, Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece, 2010 World Cup
Group B at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa is a very interesting one. It puts up two-time World Cup champions Argentina against Nigeria, South Korea, and Greece. Geographically, Group B is a fairly mixed section with each of the four teams coming from four different continents. It promises to create sweet and sour surprises with some exotic flavors from South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Argentina's coach, Diego MaradonaGroup B - The favorites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa

Argentina

The South Americans are the team in Group B with the most chances of progressing to the next round of the tournament, despite their imperfections. Los Albicelestes showed real struggle in their qualification campaign for the 2010 World Cup, but vital wins toward the end of the process sent them to the promise land in South Africa. With their names stamped in the finals, the Argentines now have high hopes of showing their fierce side, which of course they could do through the likes of their world-class players. The group of men appointed to uplift the Argentina team in a heroic manner include reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, Manchester City star Carlos Tevez, and midfield maestro Juan Veron. With the type of players that Los Albicelestes have, it is understandable that Maradona's side will be tipped as clear favorites to progress from Group B.

Greece Team Profile – 2010 FIFA World Cup

Thursday June 17 2010,
Tags: Greece, 2010 World Cup
We go down in Group B of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to meet Greece, the country capable of producing strange shocks.

Greece – The country, the football

The popular temple in Greece - AthensGreece, also referred to as the Hellenic Republic, is a country situated in the southeastern part of Europe. It is bordered by Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Its population is said to be around 11,260,400 people, and its size has an estimation of 131,990 km2.

The Greek national football team – known by the nickname “The Pirate Ship”, or “The Galanoleyki” – has been eclipsed by several other big teams in Europe over the years, having qualified only twice in the finals of the FIFA World Cup. Among their greatest moments in the sport, however, was when they emerged as European champions in 2004, after defeating favorites France in the semis, and hosts Portugal in the final of the  tournament.

Korea Republic vs Greece – World Cup Match Preview

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth will open its gates for Group B’s encounter between Korea Republic and Greece. Kick off time is at 11:30 GMT, meaning that this early game will precede the other Group B clash between Argentina and Nigeria which will start at 14:00 GMT.

Korea Republic winKorea Republic Favored To Win

South Korea lost their last two friendly matches in the build up for their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign. The Red Devils beat Asian rivals Japan on May 24 in a warm-up game. However, they stumbled against European minnows Belarus and European champions Spain on a 1-0 score line as they closed their preparations before travelling to South Africa.

But despite these latest miserable results, The Tigers of Asia remain favorites to clinch victory on Saturday, June 12. There are two reasons behind this thought. Firstly, South Korean supporters are confident that their team will raise their level of performance when it matters the most to prove that Asia has something to offer when it comes to football. Secondly, their Greek opponents presently don’t look that dangerous – neither in terms of form, nor in terms of results.

Greece will play Korea DPR in a friendly match at 18:00 GMT in Austria. The 2004 European champions are keen to enjoy a memorable World Cup tournament in South Africa.

Greek players pictured during a match.Their decision of playing the North Koreans was reportedly based on the fact that the Greeks are aiming to prepare against an opposition similar to South Korea against whom they'll be playing in Group B. Greece had an awful campaign in the 1994 World Cup where they were drawn with Argentina and Nigeria but then crashed out with no point at all.

Greece vs Korea DPR should offer knowledge to both sides who will have moutains to overcome during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Once again, Greece will meet Argentina and Nigeria whereas Korea DPR will face the great task of upseting favorites Brazil and strong sides Portugal and Cote d'Ivoire.
