Univision’s presentation of the Mexico vs. Netherlands match of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014™ delivered the most-viewed telecast in U.S. Spanish-language television history.

The match averaged 10.4 million Total Viewers and 5.8 million Adults 18-49. The match aired on the Univision Network, which was simulcast on Univision Deportes Network (UDN), on Sunday, June 29, 2014.

The match was the most-viewed telecast in U.S. Spanish-language television history among Total Viewers, besting the previous high (the 12/3/07 telecast of ‘Destilando Amor’) by +2%.

Univision’s coverage of the Mexico vs. Netherlands match out-delivered ESPN’s coverage of the same match by +57% among Total Viewers and +68% among Adults 18-49. ESPN averaged 6.6 million Total Viewers and 3.5 million Adults 18-49.

•         This was the most-viewed World Cup match ever on Univision with +10% more Total Viewers and +4% more Adults 18-49 than the previous high, the 6/27/10 World Cup match between Mexico-Argentina (9.4 million Total Viewers and 5.6 million Adults 18-49).  

The match reached 16.2 million Total Viewers who tuned into all or part of the broadcast.

During the Round of 16 match between Mexico and Netherlands (12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. ET), Univision was the highest rated broadcast station among:

Total Viewers, Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix and Sacramento

Univision stations outdelivered the same match on ESPN among:

•         Total Viewers in Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Sacramento

•         Adults 18-49 in Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Dallas and Phoenix

•         Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Sacramento

In fact, Univision stations also had more than twice the audience of ESPN among Total Viewers in Los Angeles, Miami and Houston; among Adults 18-49 in Los Angeles and Miami; and among Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles. The Univision station in Dallas had more than three times ESPN’s audience among Total Viewers, Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34.

In Dallas, the Mexico vs. Netherlands match was the No. 4 program on the station since the market went LPM in 2006, with 259,000 Adults 18-49.  It was also the most viewed World Cup match since the market became LPM among Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.  In Los Angeles, the Mexico vs. Netherlands match was the No. 6 program on the station since the market went LPM in 2004, with 887,000 Adults 18-49.

Costa Rica vs. Greece

During the Round of 16 match between Costa Rica and Greece (4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. ET), Univision was the highest rated broadcast station among:

Total Viewers and Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco and Phoenix

Adults 18-49 in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix and Sacramento

Univision stations outdelivered the same match on ESPN among Total Viewers in Los Angeles, Miami and Dallas; among Adults 18-49 in Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas and Phoenix; and among Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, Miami and Phoenix.  Univision stations had at least twice ESPN’s audience in Miami among Total Viewers and Adults 18-49; and in Phoenix among Adults 18-34.

In Miami, the Costa Rica vs. Greece match was the No. 7 program on the station since the market went LPM in 2008, with 161,000 Adults 18-49.

•         On Sunday, June 29, Univision Digital received over 8.3 million visits, ranking among Univision Digital’s top five most visited days.

•         Univision Digital’s two 2014 World Cup live streams, Netherlands vs. Mexico and Costa Rica vs. Greece, generated 3.4 million views on June 29, 41% more views than the previous Sunday’s (June 22) three live streams.

•         The Netherlands vs. Mexico match was the most watched live stream on June 29 with 2.0 million views. Over 1.0 million unique viewers streamed the match for over 42 million minutes, recording 303K viewers during an average minute.

•         The second match of the day, Costa Rica vs. Greece, generated 1.4 million views from 753K unique viewers and was streamed for 29 million minutes on June 29.

•         The Univision Deportes app continues to rank among the top five free sports apps in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store since the start of the 2014 World Cup.

Univision’s airing of the World Cup match between the Holland and Mexico on Sunday June 29th was the No. 1 program across all English and Spanish language broadcast networks that day in terms of Twitter unique authors and Tweets, followed by the match between Costa Rica and Greece, also on Univision.

Additionally, based on unique audience and impressions on Twitter, Univision ranked No. 1 for sports events across all cable and broadcast networks with the Netherlands vs. Mexico match.

Also on the day of the matches, Univision was the No. 1 Network across all English and Spanish language broadcast networks in terms of unique authors, Tweets, and Tweets per unique, beating ABC, CBS, and NBC.
