Greece are favorites to seal a place in the World Cup as they make their trip to Bucharest where they face Romania in the second leg of the WCQ playoff match.

Greece could clinch World Cup qualification in Romania on November 19, 2013.Preview: Greece 90 minutes away from World Cup berth

The 2004 European champions scored a comfortable 3-1 victory over their counterparts and a disciplined defensive performance on Tuesday will ensure their place in the last 32 of the World Cup to be held in Brazil next year.

Konstantinos Mitroglou struck a brace, with goal apiece in each half and Dimitris Salpingidis’ effort in the 20th minute rounded off a fine attacking display from Fernando Santos’ side. However Bogdan Stancu’s goal in the 19th minute gave Romania a vital away goal which could prove to be decisive in the end.
But Greece’s Portuguese coach Fernando Santos has insisted that his team will take nothing for granted despite their 3-1 lead, with much football left to be played in the second leg.

"Nothing is decided yet," the 59-year-old said after the game.

"We need to keep a cool head. Everything will be decided Tuesday. We have the advantage after the win, but we are only halfway through."

“Preperations for the decisive match will continue in earnest,” Santos said.

"The players have worked hard and took advantage of the opportunities we had. We hope to do the same during Tuesday's game," he said.

"In the coming days we will be able to release some pressure. Beyond that, we will prepare properly for the next game."

The 59 year old tactician has led his side to seven consecutive victories and has lost just once in the last 15 matches. Greece who were unlucky not to earn automatic qualification after finishing on level points with Bosnia, continued their fine form which saw them winning eight of the ten matches they played in the WCQ group stages.

Greece have largely benefited from Konstantinos Mitroglou scoring run which has seen him score seven goals in as many appearances for club and country and Santos will be hoping his star man can better his tally in the reverse leg on Tuesday.

Romania on the other hand will be hoping their star defender Vlad Chiriches can return for the second leg after missing the match at Athens due to a facial injury. The 24 year old could make an appearance on Tuesday wearing a protective mask.

The Tottenham man’s services were dearly missed as Romania failed to keep Mitroglou at bay who was a regular threat in the final third. At Bucharest Romania will have no room for error as a single goal against them will put the tie beyond their reach.

Romania’s only goal in the first leg came from Genclerbirligi’s Bogdan Stancu who struck in the 19th minute. Having an away goal advantage means, that if Romania score twice without conceding any they can seal a place in the World Cup finals at the expense of Greece.

Romanian number one Ciprian Tatarusanu who was unavailable for the trip to Athens is likely to replace Bogdan Lobont in goal. Whereas midfielders Alexandru Bourceanu and Costin Lazar are both suspended and will not feature in the second leg.

Kostas Katsouranis will not be able to lead his team on Tuesday as he serves suspension after the Greece captain picked up a yellow card in the first leg. If Greece make it to the last 32, it will be the second consecutive time they will get to participate in the illustrious tournament.
