Tags: Georgia, Greece, UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifying
Unbeaten Group F leaders Greece will know their fate in Tbilisi when they’ll affront Georgia on Tuesday night in the very last Matchday of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.
Greece made the most of their penultimate game against Croatia last Friday. Thanks to a solid performance, the Euro 2004 champions downed their opponents with 2 goals from Samaras and Fanis Gekas during the final moments of the encounter.

It was vital for the Greeks to enter the 10th Matchday of the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier with a 2-point advantage over second-placed Croatia. They won’t need to depend on the result of Croatia’s game against Latvia. Tickets for an automatic spot in Poland-Ukraine are theirs for the taking.

Greece vs Croatia Preview

Tuesday October 4 2011,
Tags: Greece, Croatia, UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifying
It will be a battle for an automatic berth when Greece will welcome rivals Croatia on home soil this Friday.
A year ago, when Croatia and Greece met in Zagreb, neither side managed to kill the other. The match ended in a goalless draw and a repeat of such a result will be more beneficial to Group F leaders Croatia this time out.

However, it will emphasize the importance of each team’s very last Euro 2012 qualifier. On October 11, Croatia will host Latvia whereas Greece will end their campaign away to Georgia.

In fact, next Tuesday’s matches will lose the “thriller factor” if Croatia beat Greece on Friday. A 4-point gap will seal the Croatians’ UEFA Euro 2012 qualification as group winners.

Too much violence and frauds. Football needs a break. The love of the game has been overshadowed by immoderate tensions in Greece, so the country’s FA has decided to call it off for some time.
On Friday, The Associated Press reported that Greece’s self-suspension is set to start on Monday, June 6. This means that the Galanolefki will have the chance to pursue their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign this weekend as they have been scheduled to host Malta.

Sofoklis Pilavios, who expressed his ambition to save Greece’s football from the “influence of hooligans, violence and match-fixers” called for the body’s executive to cast votes. The process resulted in a 49-7 result as the FA won the right to go ahead with the suspension. Commentating on the issue, FA chief Pilavios affirmed:

Greece vs Poland Report

Wednesday March 30 2011,
Greece and Poland played out an uninspired 0-0 draw in Piraeus on Tuesday evening.
Both sides created opportunities to score a winner, however an inability to convert chances at either end saw the game finish in a 0-0 stalemate. Kostas Mitrolgou and Robert Lewandowski had the best chances for each team in a forgettable affair at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

The match was memorable in the sense that it was the international curtain call for Polish defender Michal Zewlakow. The 35-year-old player turned out for his country for the 102nd time and was given a standing ovation by all in attendance when he was substituted in the 62nd minute. It marked the end of a fine Polish career which has seen Zewlakow become Poland’s all-time leader in international caps.

Greece vs Poland Preview

Monday March 28 2011,
Greece welcome EURO 2012 co-hosts Poland for an International friendly on Tuesday evening in Piraeus.
The Polish side are trying to gear up for EURO 2012 with a series of friendly fixtures and are coming off a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Lithuania over the weekend.

Greece meanwhile are aiming to qualify for the tournament and currently lead Group F of EURO 2012 qualifying with 11 points from five matches, ahead of Croatia, Georgia, and Israel in a tight section.

Greece squeaked through past Malta on Saturday with a 1-0 win courtesy of a last-gasp winner by Vasilis Torosidis in a Group F qualifier. Fernando Santos’ bunch were mediocre at best on the night in Ta’Qali where the hosts Malta so very nearly claimed a surprising point.

Malta vs Greece Report

Sunday March 27 2011,
A last-gasp goal by Vasilis Torosidis gave Greece a crucial 1-0 win over Malta on Saturday in EURO 2012 qualifying.
A stubborn defensive display by the hosts almost saw Malta, ranked 163rd in the FIFA Rankings, earn a hard-fought point against the Greeks, but late intervention by Torosidis who headed home with the last kick of the game four minutes into injury time saw Greece escape the Ta’Qali National Stadium with a 1-0 victory.

The win put Fernando Santos’ team atop Group F in EURO 2012 qualifying as Greece have amassed 11 points from five matches in the section. The Greeks took advantage of a Croatia defeat to Georgia earlier in the day meaning that Greece now are the pace-setters in the group halfway through the campaign.

Malta vs Greece Preview

Friday March 25 2011,
Greece travel to face Malta on Saturday in a Group F encounter for EURO 2012 qualifying.
The qualifier at the Ta’Qali National Stadium is a crucial one from the Greeks’ perspective as a victory could see Fernando Santos’ side leapfrog Croatia for first place in the section. Currently, Greece are second place in Group F with 8 points from 4 matches, while Croatia lead the group with 10 points. Malta will be seeking their first points of EURO 2012 qualifying having lost all four matches they have played thus far.

Greece have virtually no injury worries heading into this match as Santos can select from a full squad of players. The only issues are in the form of long-term absences for Alexandros Tziolis and more recently first-choice goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis, both of whom were not fit enough to make the squad.

Greece Super League Preview: Week 27 (Mar 20)

Saturday March 19 2011,
Olympiakos can clinch their 38th Greek league title with a victory over AEK on Sunday.
Ernesto Valverde’s team are coming off a 2-1 defeat to PAOK last week and now have the opportunity again to claim the title, this time at home to high-flying AEK, who this week advanced to the Greek Cup final.

Second-placed Panathinaikos appear to have a straightforward task as they host Kerkyra at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. The real interest now has to do with the playoff picture and the fight to avoid relegation. Kavala and Olympiakos Volos square off in a massive clash that could play a vital role in clearing up the playoff race. Atromitos need the points to avoid the drop when they face PAOK at home, while the latter are trying to clinch a playoff place.

Aris look rejuvenated under new boss Sakis Tsiolis and take on Panserraikos. Some key relegation battles are on tap this weekend. Greece Super League Preview: Week 26 (Mar 12-13)

Friday March 11 2011,
Olympiakos have the chance to clinch the league title this weekend when they travel to face PAOK in Thessaloniki.
With a giant 13-point lead, it appears only a matter of time before Ernesto Valverde’s side win the title. They can claim their 38th league title with a victory against PAOK in Thessaloniki in Sunday’s late fixture. Panathinaikos’ flickering title hopes can remain intact for a day at least if they are able to overcome Iraklis on Saturday.

This week allegations of match-fixing involving several officials from various clubs in Greece have been brought forth by Greek lawyer Alexis Kouyias, casting a shadow over the latter stages of the Super League season.

With five matches remaining, the races for Europe and the relegation battle are of most interest now. AEK and Kavala meet up on Sunday as 3rd place meets 4th in a match with serious playoff implications. Olympiakos Volos will look to take advantage of any slip-up by those sides when they travel to Asteras Tripolis, themselves looking for the points to lead them to safety.

In the match that could seal either team’s relegation fate, Panionios and Larisa battle it out at the Nea Smyrni Stadium, with a Larisa defeat probably condemning that side to the drop. Elsewhere, Ergotelis host troubled Atromitos while Panserraikos-Xanthi and Kerkyra-Aris feature matches with little to play for with regard to the standings.

Friday March 4 2011,
With only six rounds of play remaining in the Greek Super League, AEK host PAOK in the biggest match this weekend.
It will be the second time the two teams meet in the span of a few days as the the clubs played out a controversial 0-0 first leg Greek Cup semifinal on Wednesday also at the Olympic Stadium. Now, before the return leg of the semifinal in Thessaloniki this week, the two teams must turn their focus to the league in a match with playoff implications.

Olympiakos look to take another big step toward the league title when they host Ergotelis. Panathinaikos have only faint title hopes remaining at this stage but will be looking for the win when they travel to embattled Larisa.

Olympiakos Volos will expect nothing less than the three points when they take on Panserraikos. Kavala and Asteras Tripolis highlight one of the weekend’s more interesting match-ups with Kavala looking to keep up their playoff push with Asteras needing points to avoid the drop.

Greece Super League Preview: Week 24 (Feb 26-27)

Friday February 25 2011,
The Greek Super League resumes this week in the aftermath of last week’s controversial derby between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos.
In that match, Olympiakos came out victorious 2-1 and all but sealed up the title opening up a 10-point lead with seven matches remaining. However, the real story had to do with some poor refereeing decisions that went against Panathinaikos and chaotic scenes at the end when Olympiakos supporters stormed the pitch and allegedly attacked Panathinaikos players.

Add to this several instances of problems after the two sets of players headed into the locker rooms and it amounted to one of the most ill-tempered derbies in recent years. This weekend, Olympiakos face a difficult trip to Panionios, a side who seem to have the momentum in avoiding relegation. Panathinaikos are at home to Atromitos, the latter looking to assure themselves of remaining in the top-flight.

In two matches that have real bearing on the playoff race, Ergotelis welcome AEK to Crete while Kavala travel to Thessaloniki to face PAOK. Panserraikos look condemned to the drop and play their final card for survival against fellow embattled club Asteras Tripolis. Larisa also are prime relegation candidates and will hope to begin a sequence of victories beginning this weekend against Aris.

Olympiakos and Panathinaikos clash this weekend in Greece’s biggest match of the season which could end up deciding the title.
Olympiakos currently hold a seven-point advantage at the top so for Panathinaikos it is potentially their last chance to close the gap with only seven matches remaining in the championship. PAOK, currently third place, have had their weekend match against Ergotelis postponed to a later date due to their Europa League encounter with CSKA Moscow on Thursday.

AEK are in the midst of a terrible run of form and will expect the three points against rejuvenated Panionios in order to maintain their playoff hopes. Olympiakos Volos hosts Iraklis and Kavala take on Panserraikos in two other matches with playoff implications.

Elsewhere, Aris seek to return to winning ways when they make the trip to Athens to face Atromitos. Asteras Tripolis will aim to climb out of the relegation zone with a home win against Kerkyra while Larisa need only a win in order to maintain their hopes of survival as they travel to Xanthi.
