After an impressive group stage campaign, South Africa will now take on the Netherlands in their first ever appearance in the knockout rounds.

An interesting match is certainly on the cards as the Netherlands and South Africa battle for a spot in the quarter-finals on Saturday. The Oranje, who were the runners-up at the 2019 Women's World Cup, have started their campaign off excellently, with two wins and a draw from their group to end their group stage campaign on top of the table. That included a hard-fought 1-0 win over Portugal, picking up a point in a tense 1-1 draw against the USWNT, and crushing Vietnam 7-0 on matchday three to ensure that they pipped the USA to top spot in Group E.

In doing so, the Oranje avoided an early showdown against a Sweden side who have looked quite assured and confident so far in this competition. Andries Jonker's team were dealt a huge blow due to a season-ending ACL injury for all-time top goal-scorer Vivianne Miedema last year, but have proven that they still do have other key players, with five different players all on the score-sheet during the 7-0 win over Vietnam.

Meanwhile, South Africa, who are making their second-ever World Cup appearance, have by far exceeded expectations and then some. Banyana Banyana were eliminated at the 2019 edition without registering a single win to their name, and now, four years later, are into the round of 16 for the first time in team history. Despite losing their opener to Sweden, it was only by the slimmest of margins, which still kept them in the running for a round of 16 spot.

However, after throwing away a two goal lead to draw Argentina 2-2, and thus pick up their first point of the competition, there was concern as to whether South Africa would be able to take the next step and earn a win at this World Cup. On matchday three, they took on Italy, who were also desperate for a win following their humiliating 5-0 loss to Sweden on matchday three.

After a five goal thriller, it was South Africa who'd win 3-2 and against the odds, secure a spot in the round of 16 for the first time ever. While they are the natural underdogs against a Netherlands side who beat them 5-1 in an April 2022 friendly, the fact that they are even at this juncture is a huge achievement in itself and something that the team's players and fans will not forget for a long time.
