The USA vs Mexico CONCACAF World Cup qualifier on September 10 could see the Americans reach Brazil 2014 in front of their own fans.USA enduring payback time in Costa Rica

On Friday in San Jose, nothing went according to plan for Jurgen Klinsmann’s United States. The reigning CONCACAF Gold Cup champions and former leaders of the Hex surprisingly conceded two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game.

Clint Dempsey thought he initiated a comeback when he pulled one back a couple of minutes before the break to celebrate his 100th cap with the USMNT. However, the hosts killed off the game with a counterattacking move that saw Joel Campbell add his name on the scoring sheet.

The Americans had been enjoying a 12-match winning streak. Victory number 13 just could not come. Perhaps, the distraction by Tuesday’s crunch World Cup qualifier at home to Mexico played a role in distracting USA. Perhaps, the stormy weather in San Jose was the reason behind the Gold Cup champions’ unconvincing display. But most importantly, the fury of the Costa Ricans is what controlled Friday’s match.

It was a revenge mission for the hosts who had to swallow a controversial away defeat marred by heavy snow in the reverse fixture in March. That 1-0 loss in Colorado fuelled Costa Rica’s anger and dug the USMNT’s pit. The home crowd created a very hostile atmosphere, throwing eggs at the visitors’ team bus before the game.

To make matters worse, prolific goal scorer Jozy Altidore will not feature for the Americans against Mexico. The striker, along with Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron, must serve suspension after picking yellow cards in San Jose. Meanwhile, influential midfielder Michael Bradley limped off with a left ankle injury and may not be in top form on September 10.

Mexico’s crisis and new beginning

Elsewhere on Friday night, another upset occurred. The Estadio Azteca saw its home fans turn against their team in disgust and anger. It has been several months now since El Tri cannot find its way to a glorious path.

The CONCACAF World Cup qualifier against Honduras summed up the Mexicans’ current state. The great start thanks to Peralta’s 6th minute opener did not last long. Costly made the hosts pay for their inferiority in the second half of the game with a well-taken brace.

This result forced El Tri to a rare defeat on home soil – their second only in as many as 78 World Cup qualifiers. It also offered Los Catrachos exceptional away points (their first, actually) in the Hex. At this point, something had to change for the Mexicans and it happened quick as Jose Manuel de la Torre suffered the sack in the morning.

Below are video highlight's of Mexico's 2-1 loss to Honduras on September 6, 2013.

Stage set for historic USA-Mexico match up

New manager Luis Fernando Teña has virtually no time to assess the Mexican squad. He led El Tri to victory in London 2012 but now finds himself under immense pressure as time is of the essence. Sports Illustrated quoted Teña has saying:

“Every coach wants to manage the national team, but not under these circumstances. [...] These are not the perfect conditions because the standings are saying that we are in a very tough spot.”

Desperate to avoid gloom in Ohio, Mexico’s FA president, Justino Compean, added:

“There's no margin for error now, we are less than 72 hours away from (trying to win) three points. We hope to be in the next World Cup.”

Both USA and Mexico will not want to waste their time lamenting what happened last Friday. Besdies hopes of reaching Brazil are not dead at all for the Gold Cup titleholders. A bump in the road does not mean the end of it so the Americans will be willing to transform their anxiety into tears of joy on September 10, 2013.

Indeed, maximum points would guarantee them a spot at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. And what better way to do so than by beating eternal rivals Mexico?
