He was a mis-firing striker for much of his time at Manchester City last season, but Edin Dzeko has put all behind him with a blistering start to the 19th English Premier League season.
Dzeko took his tally to 6 in three games, while players from no fewer than 13 countries hit the target over the weekend. As Manchester United’s winning margin in the last game of the weekend eclipsed City’s over Tottenham, there was also a hat-trick for Wayne Rooney, the 6th of his Old Trafford career.

Only three current players have scored more Premier League goals than Rooney, but that may soon change with the Croxteth-born striker now on 122, just one behind Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka. After Anelka, the next man in Rooney’s sights is the Frenchman’s Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard, who made it 140 career goals in the Premiership with a vital penalty conversion in the Blues win over a spirited Norwich City.

Martin Skrtel doesn’t get too many but the Liverpool defender, managed to claim the new season’s 50th Premier League goal with his team’s second against Bolton Wanderers. It was a day when Liverpool’s main strikers failed to find the target, but with Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam grabbing their first goals in Liverpool red, it hardly mattered. Croatian Ivan Klasnic maintained consistent form for opponents Bolton Wanderers, scoring in his third successive game.

Five new countries got on the EPL scoreboard in Round Three; Holland (Van Persie), Portugal (Bosingwa & Nani), Slovakia (Skrtel), South Korea (Ji-Sung Park) and the USA (Clint Dempsey). Players from 19 countries have now found the net after only 3 weeks of the new season.

There were first Premier League goals for Norwich City’s much-travelled striker Grant Holt, Stoke’s Ryan Shotton after a horrendous last minute mix-up between West Brom’s Gabriel Tamas and goalkeeper Ben Foster, and Chelsea’s Juan Mata, who claimed what will likely be the latest PL goal scored this season. It came in the dying seconds to seal a 3-1 win in a game that lasted 101 minutes, a sickening concussion injury picked up by Didier Drogba, the main reason behind the extra time.

Early goals remain in short supply. There’s still been only 2 matches with a goal in the first 10 mins, both coincidentally at Stamford Bridge; Jose Bosingwa this weekend and Shane Long last. Long’s goal inside 4 minutes remains the fastest EPL goal so far this season.

Until the last game of a goal-packed weekend, only 4 goals had been claimed by Englishmen. The avalanche of goals at Old Trafford however redressed that situation, with 7 of the 10 coming from the head or boot of Welbeck, Young, Rooney or Walcott.

So the EPL takes a break for internationals next week, with Bosnian, Edin Dzeko topping the scoring charts with 6. It’s already looking like a duel between the Manchester clubs this season, so it’s no surprise to see Wayne Rooney breathing down the City player’s neck on 5.

Nine others have managed more than one goal, including United’s Danny Welbeck whose goal against Spurs last Monday rendered him the youngest player to get on the scoresheet this season at 20 years.
