There’s always something controversial to discuss when Barcelona and Real Madrid clash against each other. In the present case, Pepe is in the headlines for all the bad reasons.
It is natural for the Portguese defender to have issues concerning his discipline on the pitch. At the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, he was involved in an ugly incident which apparently went unseen by the match’s officials.
Pepe was captured stamping on Lionel Messi’s hand. The Real Madrid defender escaped punishment but his behavior evidently drew reaction from El Clasico spectators. Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere instantly posted the following message on his Twitter account:
“Poor from Pepe!”
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney also wrote:
“Pepe. What an idiot. Sometimes people wind u up.”
Wayne Rooney impressed while playing in an unfamiliar central midfield role for Manchester United as they cruised to a 2-0 win over Otelul Galati.

The result moves United to the top of UEFA Champions League Group C on goal difference, after former leaders SL Benfica drew 1-1 with FC Basel.
The decision to play Rooney in midfield was forced by the injury absence of Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher.
Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with Rooney’s performance after the game, and will also be pleased to have moved top of the Group C standings.
“He was our best player. He showed great awareness of that role,” Ferguson told BBC Sport. “His selection of passes at times was very good and he showed great energy and determination. We got a really good performance out of him.”

The FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011 gala is 35 days away from taking place and the shortlists for the men’s awards have been revealed.

Most football fans are particularly interested in the player award nomination. Lionel Messi, who is the reigning champion, is poised to retain his title. However, his 2011 Copa America fiasco with Argentina could cost him a ball made of gold. A potential contender would be Luis Suarez. The ex-Ajax striker was controversially omitted from the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or award list.
Expectedly, Xavi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been named alongside Messi whereas Sergio Aguero, Nani, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez are the only English Premier League-based players in the list.
Interestingly, young Brazilian star Neymar is part of it. Copa America hero Diego Forlan and Anzhi Makhachkala’s Samuel Eto’o have been included as well.
Two penalties from England striker Wayne Rooney were the difference as Manchester United gained a crucial 2-0 win at SC Otelul Galati.

After getting their UEFA Champions League Group C campaign off to a sputtering start with two draws, United lifted themselves into second place with this victory.
United had the better of the early stages, but the first shot on goal came when Galati’s Bratislav Punosevac had his effort saved by Anders Lindegaard.
Good work by Portuguese winger Nani created United’s best chance but Michael Carrick fired high over the bar.
Galati had one more chance to break the deadlock before half-time, but Livlu Antal directed his header over the crossbar.
Rooney shot wide from United’s first chance of the second half, but then won a 64th minute penalty when his left wing cross was handled by Otelul defender Sergio Costin.
How bad is the news about Wayne Rooney’s 3-match ban from a Manchester United point of view or a Liverpool perspective?
One could view Wayne Rooney’s horrendous red card incident against Montenegro as a total description and reminder of the player’s destructive temper. Prior to what happened during that international match, Wayne Rooney was building a rather good reflection of himself in the media thanks to his top scoring form and his amusing off-the-pitch info such as the progress of his hair transplant.
But the humiliating news about his father’s arrest due to gambling-related issues was only the prelude of something unfortunate. Did distraction play a role in Rooney’s violent conduct during England’s UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro? It perhaps did…
Moral affected for the worst or the better?
But negative incidents can sometimes create positive outcomes. Manchester United’s battle against Liverpool on Saturday will help pundits determine the status of Wayne Rooney’s maturity as a role model to aspiring footballers.
Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has found himself under the media spotlight in the wake if his silly red card during the recent 2-2 draw in Montenegro.

Rooney’s rash kick aimed at Miodrag Dzudovic forced England to play a man down for the last 17 minutes. The rattled Three Lions would go on to concede an injury time equalizer as Montenegro sealed themselves a EURO 2012 qualifying playoff.
England themselves sealed automatic qualification for the Poland/Ukraine tournament, but the sending off of Rooney put a dampener on proceedings and the effect will continue to linger.
Firstly, Rooney has ensured the hysterical English media should use him as a whipping boy for a few weeks at least. Any negative attention tends to be blown out of proportion, and can become an unwelcome distraction.
England sealed automatic qualification for EURO 2012 courtesy of a turbulent 2-2 draw in Montenegro.

Ashley Young and Darren Bent fired England into a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first 31 minutes, and the Three Lions appeared to be cruising toward the tournament finals in Poland/Ukraine.
Elsad Zverotic halved England’s lead to give Montenegro hope on the stroke of half-time, before a rocky second half saw England concede a late equalizer to Andrija Delibasic, and have star striker Wayne Rooney sent off.
The draw also sealed a qualifying playoff for Montenegro, as third placed Switzerland were beaten 2-0 in Wales.
England started positively and took an 11th minute lead when Rooney released Theo Walcott, and the Arsenal winger’s inch perfect cross was headed home by Young at the back post.
England can seal qualification for EURO 2012 with a win a draw in Montenegro on Friday.

England currently lead Group G by six points, while second placed Montenegro are six points further back having played one game less.
Montenegro can qualify automatically themselves with a win here, and victory in Switzerland in their final qualifying match.
Star striker Wayne Rooney should play for England, and Fabio Capello told the media this week that Rooney was “relaxed” and able to play despite the arrest of his father in a Scottish betting scandal. Rooney will be a key man for England, and has registered three goals and three assists in his six qualifying appearances so far.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker is likely to start in midfield for England, while Frank Lampard served notice of his return to form with a Premier League hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers over the weekend.
Ashley Young is only moments away from living his dream of playing in the UEFA Champions League.

The ex-Aston Villa ace is expected to feature against FC Basel on Tuesday night. Commenting on this prospect, Ashley Young told the press as Manchester United’s official website reported:
“When you come to a club like Manchester United, you are going to be challenged,” Young said at the pre-match press conference.
“I am definitely someone who wants to challenge myself at the top level and being able to play in the big competitions at club level is every boy's dream.
“Hopefully I’ll be selected and can play a part in the game and I’m looking forward to playing in the Champions League.”
It looks like extra-terrestrial Barcelona are no more alone on their out-of-this-world planet. The new generation of Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils seems to have joined the Catalans up there.
A Barcelona-Manchester United matchup in the UEFA Champions League final this season will arguably confirm this opinion. The two powerhouses have met twice in only 3 European finals since 2009 with results explaining that Barcelona remain a mile ahead of Manchester United.
Bitter memories… the two games that pushed Man United to become a better team
What Red Devils supporters witnessed at the Stadio Olimpico in 2009 was rather humiliating. How did the good old Fergie seem so lost in tactics against a manager as inexperienced—yet cunning—as Pep Guardiola?
Wayne Rooney is on fire for Manchester United at the moment and England recently benefited from that against Bulgaria.
When football fans discuss about their opinion concerning the world’s best player, it is most likely for the names of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi Hernandez to come out from their mouth. Since the past 3 or 4 years, awards have been mainly contested by Messi and Ronaldo.
The pair—composed of Argentine talent and Portuguese trickery—has taken world football’s stage by storm. Midfielder Xavi has also strengthened into a maestro.
Where Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi have ranked in recent FIFA Awards:
2007 Ballon d’Or: Cristiano Ronaldo 2nd, Lionel Messi 3rd
2008 Ballon d’Or: Cristiano Ronaldo 1st, Lionel Messi 2nd
In an early season run of record-breaking for his team, Wayne Rooney, Saturday, became only the fourth player in history to record back-to-back hat-tricks in Premier League football, emulating the feats of Les Ferdinand, Ian Wright and Didier Drogba before him.
Rooney’s treble also took him onto 125 PL career goals, leapfrogging over Nicolas Anelka and Robbie Keane, two of only four current players who prior to Saturday, had been above him in the list. Frank Lampard (140) and club-mate Michael Owen (149) are now firmly in his sights.
The Croxteth-born striker is now #10 in the all-time PL top-scorers list, but has still got some way to go to match the 260 PL goals scored by former England captain Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers & Newcastle United. At 25 though, time is on his side.
With Rooney’s already burgeoning reputation growing apace with his new hair, United have set the standard for the rest to follow this term.
Chicharito is on the brink of really kick starting his 2011/12 English Premier League campaign. He did it last season; can he follow up with new achievements this term?

Javier Hernandez is now injury free as he confirmed last week while on international duty with Mexico. With Danny Welbeck out due to injury, Chicharito is poised to start for Manchester United against Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday. In 45 appearances for the Red Devils last season, the Mexican scored 20 goals and was influential in the buildup of many other goals.
This year, Javier Hernandez has not found the net yet, but colleague Wayne Rooney can see that coming. The English striker, who is apparently delighted to have Javier back, announced his expectations in an interview with MUTV.
England can take a huge step towards Euro 2012 qualification when they play host to Wales at Wembley.

If England get a win or draw against their British rivals, they will need only one point in their final game at Montenegro to wrap up qualification.
Wales picked up their first points of this qualifying campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over Montenegro last Friday. England won 3-0 in Bulgaria on the same day, with Gary Cahill opening the scoring and Wayne Rooney adding a brace.
Steven Gerrard and Jack Wilshere remain sidelined with injury for England, while Leighton Baines, Darren Bent and Micah Richards are also ruled out.
Young Manchester United defender Chris Smalling played right back in the win in Bulgaria, and he could be handed the task of marking Wales’ star player Gareth Bale.
Rooney has been tipped to find the target in a predicted victory for England over Bulgaria as the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers resume on Friday.

Wayne Rooney has been in firing form at club level. He began the season well with a goal against West Bromwich Albion on the first-match of the English Premier League.
Recently, he hit a hat-trick in the Red Devils’ 8-2 roasting of Arsenal. In total, Wayne Rooney has scored 5 goals in 4 games. Fabio Capello is delighted by the English man’s current performance as he told reporters on Thursday:
“Goals are a fantastic medicine for a forward. Now is a good moment for him. The spirit of Manchester United is different. Those young players have put something different on the pitch.”
England will be looking to continue their Euro 2012 qualification push when they travel to face Bulgaria in Sofia.

England currently top qualifying Group G, but are above qualification rivals Montenegro on goal difference alone, and will be looking for a win in Bulgaria. Montenegro will be playing against Wales in Cardiff on Friday night.
Bulgaria are six points behind England and Montenegro, and can drag themselves back into the playoff race with a win over the Three Lions.
Former German international Lothar Matthaus will be taking charge of a Bulgaria team that is still looking to score their first home goal in Group G. “If we give our best and get the fans behind us, we could surprise England,” Matthaus told the official UEFA website.
He was a mis-firing striker for much of his time at Manchester City last season, but Edin Dzeko has put all behind him with a blistering start to the 19th English Premier League season.

Dzeko took his tally to 6 in three games, while players from no fewer than 13 countries hit the target over the weekend. As Manchester United’s winning margin in the last game of the weekend eclipsed City’s over Tottenham, there was also a hat-trick for Wayne Rooney, the 6th of his Old Trafford career.
Only three current players have scored more Premier League goals than Rooney, but that may soon change with the Croxteth-born striker now on 122, just one behind Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka. After Anelka, the next man in Rooney’s sights is the Frenchman’s Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard, who made it 140 career goals in the Premiership with a vital penalty conversion in the Blues win over a spirited Norwich City.
The England vs Netherlands international friendly will not take place due to London’s critical and on-going rioting, it has been announced.

According to reports from the English media, the English FA concluded on this decision after talks with the police. London is already struggling to manage the looting and burnings with police men, so it will presumably be difficult for more police men to take charge of Wednesday’s England vs Netherlands match at Wembley. A statement from the FA read:
“It is with regret that tomorrow’s [Wednesday 10 August] international fixture with Holland at Wembley has been called off.”
England’s players are visibly distracted by the terrible scenes in London. Rio Ferdinand wrote via Twitter:
Wayne Rooney might be one of the most deadly players in the Premier League due to his fierceness on the field, but there are still much more developments he could undergo, according to Paul Scholes.

The Manchester United squad somehow ‘lost’ a legend when the 36-year-old Englishman decided to hang his boots after the Champions League final at the Wembley Stadium. The one-club man announced his retirement on May 31 with immediate effect, and eventually entered the Red Devils’ coaching staff.
As a player having served United for 17 years, Scholes could consider himself in the perfect position to spot rising superstars at the Old Trafford. Apparently, the man at the top of his list of incomplete but precocious players at the moment is none other than the No.10 striker Wayne Rooney.
More and more fingers are pointing at Manchester United’s Chicharito to become the hero in tonight’s UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley. Rooney has also pointed his.
Admirers of Javier Hernandez have voiced out their amazement at the player’s quick settlement at Manchester United following his transfer from Guadalajara last summer. Ahead of Barcelona vs Manchester United, team mate Wayne Rooney praised the Mexican striker as he told the club’s official website:
“I don't think anybody expected this sort of season from him. But since he has joined [Manchester United], he has worked hard and cemented his place in the side.
“He is playing week in and week out and he’s scoring a lot of goals. It’s quite incredible and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up scoring the winning goal in the final to top it all off.
