The Brazilians are poised to repeat what they achieved at the Estadio Castelao a year ago: they had to beat Mexico to reach the knockout stages of the Confederations Cup and they successfully completed their mission. El Tri were forced to crash out in the group stages. The difference today is that Mexico will not be disqualified even if they were to lose. This is because they enter the match with three points like their opponents, thanks to a well-deserved win over Cameroon on Matchday 1.
Fortaleza is certainly the perfect location for such a high profiled encounter. Although protests against corruption and social issues are set to take place in the streets before kick-off, the fans in the stadium are expected to fuel the meeting with passion and pride.
Croatia collapsed against Brazil in what many saw as a controversial game. The five-time world champions could make of Mexico their next victims. But for Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Tuesday’s Group A clash is an opportunity for El Tri to show its colours. He told the press:
“We're not nervous about it at all. In fact, getting a start like this has calmed our nerves. The team's only going to get stronger and we're on the up and up. We'll be going into the game in a happy frame of mind and ready for the challenge.”
The player to mark will be Neymar. Interestingly, the Barcelona attacker is a yellow card away from suspension. Statistics by Lance! Reveal that the Brazilian number 10 star already counts five yellows in his last 14 international appearances. Will the Mexicans trick him into getting booked? Reflecting on this issue, Neymar stated:
“I am not worried. I am going to play to win the second game. It’s not what I wanted but that’s the way it is. It’s all part and parcel. I am going to play my normal game. If I start thinking about it, that’ll make it worse.”
Neymar is the jewel in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team. He will have the support of his team mates as Chelsea midfielder Oscar confirmed:
“He is the guy that usually forces other people to get a yellow. It’s difficult to see him getting another yellow. We are going to do all we can to let Neymar play without worrying about this because we know that he is a player who can decide the game.”
Vying for the spotlight alongside Neymar will be Mexico’s Javier Hernandez and Oribe Peralta. This clash promises to be a cracker with rapid play and counter attacks.
