France will have a horrendous task to turn a 2-0 deficit in their favour when they face Ukraine in the second leg of the WCQ playoff.

Preview: France with a mountain to climb after first leg disaster

France must beat Ukraine 3-0 to reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup.Ukraine put up a memorable performance which has allowed them to earn a favourites tag as they aim for a place in the World Cup for the first time since 2006. The Yellow-Blues who entered the match as the underdogs put forth a spirited performance and after Roman Zozulya’s 61st minute strike put the hosts ahead, Andriy Yarmolenko’s penalty in the 83rd minute doubled the lead for the Ukrainians who will be buoyed by their performance in the first keg as they prepare for the match in Paris.

France on the other hand will have to produce the performance of a lifetime if they are to have any chances of making it to the last 32. Les Bleus have participated in all of the last four editions of the World Cup, having won the coveted title in 1998 and it will surely be a huge disappointment if they fail to make it to the World Cup Finals this time around.

Olivier Giroud who led the line for the Bleus in the first leg has insisted that the team are raring to give their all in the second leg as they aim to avoid the disappointment of not making it to the World Cup. The Arsenal man was also critical of his own performance in the first leg and reiterated that he will do his best to redeem himself in front of the home crowd.

“We are ready to die on the field to get there," he told reporters.

"We want to show the French people and to ourselves that we are proud to represent France. We want to make proud all the people who love us and support us."

"I am offended [with the first-leg display]. I want to redeem myself. Like all my team-mates, I guess."

"They will give us exactly the same treatment on Tuesday. We won't be surprised. They are going to hit us hard.

"We want to do better, to make history. It is a matter of pride. We'll do it, I firmly believe. Today, I still can't grasp the idea of France not going to Brazil."

His club teammate Laurent Koscielny who had a disastrous evening after giving away a penalty and then receiving his marching orders for an off the ball scuffle with Olexander Kucher, will miss the match and is likely to be replaced by Real Madrid centre half Raphael Varane who has made a speedy recovery from a knee injury.

What makes matters even worse for France is Ukraine’s disciplined defensive line which has managed to keep eight clean sheets on the run. Mykhaylo Fomenko’s men have conceded just four goals in the World Cup Qualification campaign so far and will be a difficult unit to break down.

Didier Deschamps’ has identified Ukraine’s resilient defensive line to be a threat to Les Bleus but has also warned his players to be wary of the opposition’s counter attack instincts.

"What awaits us on Tuesday is the possibility to turn the tide," he said.

"We must apply pressure, but also be aware that they will not keep 10 players behind the ball."

"They will not come to defend. It will require total football and that we maintain a high tempo from beginning to end."

Ukraine will however be without defender Oleksandr Kucher who received a red card in the first leg but Fomenko should be confident of getting the result despite the absence of the Shakhtar Donetsk man.
