Preview: Spurs’ perfect record set to be extended
Spurs’ ride in Europe has been enjoyable for their fans so far. They seat at the top of Group K thanks to two dominating displays – at home to Tromsø on Matchday 1 and away to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala earlier this month.
With five goals and none conceded, Tottenham Hotspur have rightfully been tagged as favourites to succeed London rivals Chelsea as Europa League champions. Besides, they possess 36-year-old gem Andre Villas-Boas who led FC Porto to glory in the competition three seasons ago.
Last season, Spurs had a hard time qualifying for the Round of 32 with as many as four draws in the group stages. They however managed to reach the knockout stages only to painfully lose to FC Basel in the quarter-finals.
This season, AVB’s men look much stronger while living life after Gareth Bale. Sheriff are clearly underdogs. Their failure to beat Anzhi on home soil (0-0) and Tromsø away (1-1) should increase Spurs’ confidence.
Should Group K’s other game end in a draw this Thursday, Tottenham Hotspur could be celebrating passage into the next round already. Ahead of Matchday 3, the standings put Spurs four points clear of Sheriff while the rest have a point each from a possible six.
