As Manchester United get ready to take on Liverpool at Anfield, here’s a look at some of the key battles that could define this fixture.

Robin Van Persie and Daniel Sturridge light up the pre-match hype of the Liverpool vs Manchester United fixture scheduled for Sunday, September 1, 2013.Sturridge vs RVP

The Manchester United striker has carried on where he left off last season and pretty much the same goes for Daniel Sturridge who since making the move to Liverpool from Chelsea earlier this January, has shown just why he is so highly rated by Brendan Rodgers. Both men are free-scoring players and a lot will fall on these two to deliver the goods for their respective teams.

De Gea vs Mignolet

Since leaving Sunderland for Liverpool, Simon Mignolet has been one of the best player for the Reds.

On the first day of the season, the Belgian made sure that his side gets all three points, thanks to a great penalty save late on in the game against Stoke. And, the former Sunderland man was at his best once again when his team faced Aston Villa. Mignolet’s impressive skills will be put to test against the Red Devils.

Manchester United number one David De Gea has divided opinion amongst the Red Devils faithful since joining them a few years back. After showing a lot of frailties in his first season, De Gea has gone from strength to strength and has become a very integral part of the starting eleven. Coming up against Liverpool will be quite a test for the youngster who will be put to the sword by a very good offensive unit.

Philippe Coutinho vs Rio Ferdinand

The young Brazilian is one of the most exciting players in the Premier League. Blessed with excellent ball control and surreal dribbling skills, the youngster will be a constant menace for Rio Ferdinand who is not really as good as he used to be a few years ago. The former England international will be annoyed by the gifted Brazilian which means that Ferdinand will have to use all his experience in order to not to make a fool out of himself.

Daniel Sturridge vs Nemanja Vidic

The England international has been in dangerous goals scoring form since the start of the new campaign. Not treasured at Chelsea, it is at Liverpool where he has come off age. And it will be Vidic’s task to keep the Englishman quite. The Serb has the ability and the experience to subdue Sturrdige but will have to be aware of the Liverpool man’s great pace and skill.

Steven Gerrard vs Michael Carrick

Despite his age, Gerrard is still the main driving force in the midfield for the Reds. When it comes to reading the game, making interceptions and creating something out of nothing, no one does it better than Stevie G.
Carrick on the other hand, is no Gerrard but will be the starting point of everything good his side will do at Anfield this Sunday. The England international’s ability to spread the ball in the silkiest and smoothest of fashions and cutting off space will be something that could help David Moyes’ side a lot.
