These are five ways in which Liverpool can beat United at Old Trafford:
Liverpool must put as many balls into the box as possible.
United showed their vulnerability in defending balls inside the box against Chelsea. Daniel Sturridge’s mazy run led to Jonathon...
Manchester United vs Liverpool
The Red Devils earned a point in controversial fashion last Sunday. Two crucial penalty decisions went in their favor as Chelsea dropped a 3-0 lead and thus two precious points at the Bridge.
Manchester United are now two points behind league leaders Manchester City. Ferguson’s men could temporarily claim the top spot but will Liverpool allow them to do so?
The Merseyside Reds have a pretty good record against Manchester United so they can confidently fancy their chances of winning. Liverpool should find pride, favor and hope in the following: their FA Cup triumph over Man United in January, Man City’s 6-1 humiliation of the Red Devils at Old Trafford and Blackburn Rovers’ 3-2 giant-killing at the same venue back in December.
The fixture in White Hart Lane between these two sides wasn’t pretty. Tottenham put four past the team from Merseyside. Liverpool had two men sent off the pitch and thus finished with just nine players. Liverpool recently has picked up their form. They have knocked out both Manchester sides from cup competitions. They carried their Cup form into the league as they beat Wolves by three goals.
Liverpool put paid to Manchester United in the FA Cup this week. Dirk Kuyt was once again the hero as he scored a late winner past David De Gea, a keeper whose days at United are perhaps numbered. While Liverpool is mixing it with the big boys in the cup competitions, they are blatantly failing with the small boys in the Premier League.
The clash will mark the first time the teams face one another since Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches after being accused of racially abusing Manchester United left back Patrice Evra in October.
Spurs’ fate was decided on Friday night. Van der Vaart’s 42nd minute goal helped them defeat Watford 1-0 en route to the Last 16 of the competition. Also on Friday was Everton vs Fulham. Murphy’s penalty goal gave the lead to the London side but Everton issued a comeback thanks to goals from Stracqualursi and Fellaini.
On Saturday, the FA Cup will continue with Queens Park Rangers vs Chelsea at 7:00am EST and 12:00pm GMT. Villas-Boas’ Blues cruised to victory in the previous round with a 4-0 result against 2010 FA Cup finalists Portsmouth. They are poised to beat QPR even in the absence of African stars Drogba and Kalou.
At 7:45am and 12:45pm GMT, Anfield will once again transform into the center of attraction as Liverpool will host Manchester United.
Liverpool claimed a major scalp by knocking Manchester City out of the Carling Cup. They achieved the feat over two legs. In the first leg at the Etihad Stadium, Kenny Dalglish’s side showed great determination. City kept knocking on the door throughout the match but Liverpool defended with great strength and kept them out. A Steven Gerrard penalty saw them win the game.
Liverpool is a team of multiple facades. On one hand, the top sides don’t fancy facing them as Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea would testify. On the other hand, the smaller sides always fancy their chances against them as Bolton proved against them.
1) Who scored the first goal of the season?
How else to start but by recalling this moment which happened at Anfield? On Matchday 1 of the 2011/12 English Premier League, Liverpool hosted Sunderland. The Merseyside Reds were given the chance to take a seventh-minute lead through the penalty spot. This opportunity, however, went missing as striker Luis Suarez wasted it.
The Uruguayan later redeemed himself with a twelfth-minute strike which became the first goal of the 2011/12 English Premier League season. This will remind some people that Luis Suarez also makes the headlines for good reasons…
The top three zone in the Premiership is not Tottenham Hotspur’s usual place – especially not during the second half of the campaign. The reality, this year, is that the London club can optimistically dream about lifting the prestigious trophy in May.
A win for either team would go some way towards boosting morale. City were eliminated from the FA Cup last weekend at the hands of arch rival Manchester United, while Liverpool have went from one PR disaster to another thanks to Stewart Downing being charged of an alleged attack on his ex-girlfriend.
The Third Round produced everything football has to offer – controversy, drama, upsets and goals. Liverpool opened this season’s FA Cup competition with a 5-1 demolition of Oldham Athletic at Anfield. The result didn’t portray the visitors’ brave performance as the Merseyside Reds put on a great show.
At White Hart Lane, Spurs made fun of Cheltenham Town. A spirited performance from Giovanni dos Santos inspired Harry Redknapp’s second-string side. Norwich City trounced Burnley 4-1 at Carrow Road to make a rare appearance in the Fourth Round while Derby County ousted Carling Cup contenders Crystal Palace on a 1-0 score line.
In one of the biggest headlines, Swindon Town made a giant killing by securing a 2-1 victory over Premier League team Wigan Athletic. Newcastle United left it late at home to Blackburn Rovers, Everton beat Tamworth 2-0, Stoke City won 3-1 away to Gillingham and Aston Villa defeated Bristol Rovers as expected.
For the second time already this year, Manchester City and Liverpool will clash at the Etihad Stadium. The Blues hammered the Merseyside Reds 3-0 in both sides’ latest meeting. Midfielder Gareth Barry received a second-half red card but Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and James Milner all inscribed their names on the scoring sheet as the visitors produced virtually nothing from their huge time of ball possession.
This result helped Manchester City strengthen their authority at the top of the table despite the challenges posed by second-placed Manchester United and third-placed Tottenham Hotspur. The gap between City and Liverpool is currently of 14 points in the English Premier League but this statistic will probably not count during the Carling Cup semifinal tie.
Kenny Dalglish will no doubt be pleased with the performance of his players on te field, but the idiotic actions of one fan have again damaged the club's reputation.
The Merseyside Reds overcame the pressure of playing the first fixture of this year’s FA Cup competition. Oldham Athletic never looked dangerous anyways, until they tried to prove otherwise on the pitch. Inside the 28th minute, Robbie Simpson stunned Pepe Reina with an incredible shot from long range which hit the top right corner of the net.
At that moment, followers of the match perhaps thought that Liverpool – probably distracted by the absence of goal poacher Luis Suarez – would succumb to an upset. However, Kenny Dalglish and his men had other ideas.
The legend rallied his team from the sidelines and the prayers of the anxious home crowd quickly received a response through Craig Bellamy’s equalizer in the 30th minute. Game on!
Italian Serie A clubs Lazio and Genoa are on the verge of completing a co-ownership deal to land Uruguayan international Emiliano Alfaro, who currently plys his trade at Liverpool of Montevideo.
Sandra Diaz, Luis Suarez’s mother, claims to know the 24-year-old better than anyone in the world. The Montevideo inhabitant spoke to the press on Wednesday as she came in defense of her accused son, saying:
“I laugh when they call my son racist. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm afraid now when he comes up against a black person, especially because they're going to go looking for him.
“I know my son. I know he has to calm down a bit with things like the salute he made to rival fans. But he's no racist.”
Others believe that this race row, marked by the alleged use of the word “negro” or “negrito”, is the result of cultural misunderstanding.
City bounced back quickly from their New Year’s Day defeat at the hands of Sunderland, while this result snapped a five game unbeaten streak for the Reds.
The Citizens still lead the English Premier League table ahead of Manchester United. However, they are on top through goal difference only.
