Preview

The FA Cup 4th round kicked off on Thursday but all eyes will be on Friday's set of fixtures. Chelsea will lock horns with surprise Premier League title contenders Aston Villa but the standout game will see Tottenham and Manchester City, two of the most exciting teams to watch in Europe, go head-to-head for a spot in the next round. `

This will be Spurs' first game since their thrilling battle with Manchester United in the Premier League roughly two weeks ago. Ange Postecoglou's men traveled to Old Trafford and despite missing several key players due to injuries and the ongoing Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, his men put in a lovely performance at the Theatre of Dreams and came away with a point.

Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancour got on the scoresheet, with many arguing that the North London heavyweights deserved the win. Regardless, that result leaves Tottenham with five wins from their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Despite this, Ange's men were enjoying an uptick in form. Kulusevski and Co. have tasted victories over Bournemouth, Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest recently while beating Burnley 1-0 in the previous round of the FA Cup.

However, there is no tougher task in English football than beating Manchester City. Tottenham pulled off an impressive 3-3 draw when they last crossed paths with Guardiola's side in early December but will need to overcome their rivals this time around.

Spurs have already been dumped out of the Carabao Cup and while they are fifth in the Premier League, only eight points behind current leaders Liverpool, the perennial underachievers are not expected to win the top flight, thus leaving the FA Cup as their best shot at silverware. Can the North London side overcome Manchester City?

The Cityzens, on the flip side, enter this game having won a handful of trophies over the past few months. Haaland and Co. followed up last season's unforgettable treble by lifting the UEFA Super Cup before ultimately adding the FIFA Club World Cup crown to their cabinet in late December.

That victory came during a rough spell for the club when Pep's side had won only one in six consecutive Premier League matches. However, the club have since turned a corner, winning six in a row since their frustrating 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace just before the FIFA Club World Cup.

As a result, form is on the visitors' side. Furthermore, Manchester City will be keen for revenge after dropping points at home to Spurs in the league under controversial circumstances.

The treble winners threw away a one-goal advantage on two separate occasions but despite that, Jack Grealish had the golden opportunity to win City the game in the final few minutes. However, the referee's decision to halt play for a foul on Haaland instead of playing the advantage denied the English winger a one-on-one with Tottenham's keeper.

Regardless, Pep must be wary. The Cityzens crashed out of the Carabao Cup away to Newcastle and will need to bring their A-game if they wish to avoid elimination at the hands of another Premier League rival.

Team news

Tottenham: Son Heung-min, Pape Sarr, and Yves Bissouma are all away on international duty due to the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations. Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon, Alejo Veliz, Manor Solomon, and Giovani Lo Celso are all sidelined. However, on a positive note, James Maddison is back to fitness while Dejan Kulusevski has overcome illness and is available for this tie.

Man City: Ederson picked up an injury in the comeback win at Newcastle but while the Brazilian has recovered, Stefan Ortega could start in goal. Additionally, Erling Haaland is yet to return from injury. However, John Stones is available selection.
