There is so much to play for on the final week of what has been a very long and eventful season in England. The title is yet to be decided with Manchester City and Manchester United locked on the same number of points.
The battle for the final two Champions League spots is very tight between Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United whereas the hunt is over for 2011/12 UEFA Champions League finalists Chelsea.
Meanwhile, way down the table, one more team will join Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers out of the English Premier League. Will it be Queens Park Rangers or Bolton Wanderers?
Andy Carroll’s 84th minute header, which never stood as a goal according to the referee, has divided concerned football fans. While some believe the match officials’ decision was correct, others insist that the ball crossed the line. Even camera technology cannot settle this case with a final general opinion.
While debates over Carroll’s denied equalizer at Wembley continue to hit football forums, the truth is that Liverpool enter Monday’s battle as beaten FA Cup finalists. The Merseyside Reds have absolutely nothing to play for in the English Premier League but pride.
They may want to remain in the top half of the table and prove to their fans that the club’s spirit is not dead regardless of the many disappointments they have encountered this season.
Arsenal seemingly had it all wrapped up- they had been winning game after game leaving Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle in their wake. They had even beaten the current top side in the league Manchester City. Unfortunately, points have been hard to come by recently and Arsenal now finds themselves in a tough battle to keep hold of the spot.
Stiliyan Petrov was a much loved professional in England’s top flight to say the least until a terrible disease, namely leukemia brought an end to the Bulgarian’s career. In a season where Villa needed him more than ever, they have had to trudge on without him. Their manager, Alex McLeish, isn’t the most popular man as far as the fans are concerned due to his ties with Birmingham City. Thus, the fans are currently extremely unhappy.
Sixth-placed Chelsea are looking to capture the maximum 12 points from their last 4 games at stake. The task on Sunday will be to close the gap against fourth-placed Newcastle United from 4 points to a single one.
Victory for the Blues will temporarily put them above Tottenham Hotspur. The latter will be in action at home to Blackburn Rovers in the day’s 15:00 GMT (11:00am EST) kick-off.
Chelsea have a lot of experience in the English Premier League having won the competition a few times in the 21st century. The big question now is the following: how well can they use their resources to make a very late comeback in the top 4 this season?
Harry Redknapp must be a bit red-faced now. With 6 games remaining, he said Spurs had to win 5 of those games. Spurs went on to lose to Norwich City. Redknapp said they must win all their remaining games. Enter QPR and a another loss and to 10 men to boot. This equals ONE win in 9 games scoring 8 goals. Spurs currently sit in 5th place.
Newcastle vs. StokeNewcastle sits fifth in the Premier League table having won their previous five games and is looking to claim fourth spot by displacing Tottenham Hotspur. Their opponents are Stoke City- the side fourteenth in the table. Stoke has recorded just one win in their previous...
It was just after Real Madrid’s qualification into the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League that Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho began what appeared to be mind games with rival Pep Guardiola, as he downgraded Chelsea’s status by overly elevating the Catalans prior to their meeting at the Stamford Bridge.
“It could be Bayern or Barcelona,” the BBC quoted him saying. “I just don't think it will be Real Madrid v Chelsea and we know why.”
"Barcelona aren't the favourites, they are super-favourites."
Such a statement – especially from a football personality as experienced as Jose Mourinho – cannot be instantly substantiated. One can even question the level of sincerity behind this statement.
Exaggeration of opinion? Perhaps, but it is easier to believe that the Real Madrid manager was simply trying to make one or several points implicitly.
That is what the stakes are on Sunday at Wembley Stadium when Spurs and Chelsea face each other in the second FA Cup semi-final deciding which of them face Liverpool, who themselves are gunning for a second piece of silverware to patch up the wounds from a terrible 2012 campaign.
A Merseyside Derby at Wembley Stadium promises to be electric
Could Everton make an already inconsistent season for Liverpool even worst?
Just a day before the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, not only will this match be emotional; but it will also mean a lot for two sides that have struggled all season.
Liverpool went out and spent over £50 million on summer transfers and is currently sitting in eighth place in the Barclays Premier League. Not only is that not acceptable for a team like Liverpool, but to make matters worst, Everton is currently in seventh place.
The top 5 all play in 2 consecutive days making it smorgasbord viewing for EPL fans. Monday’s fixtures will be Chelsea against Fulham while Tottenham take on Norwich City. Previous results for these fixtures yielded a tie and a Spurs win at Carrow Road.
Over the weekend, Spurs were held to a goalless draw by Sunderland while Chelsea rode their luck as they did against Benfica to beat Wigan 2-1. Presumably fixture congestions are why they are playing twice within 3 days. If this was not enough, the Blues and Spurs meet on the 15th in an FA Cup semi-final derby.
Chelsea surely are wondering if they should have perhaps delved into the transfer window for some depth. They face Barcelona next week at home, Arsenal away and back to the Nou Camp the following week.
April was supposed to be the month in which the EPL Champions would be decided courtesy of the Manchester derby on the 30th. However, the title could arguably be decided as early as tomorrow if Arsenal manage to get over the hump they suffered at QPR last week and do Manchester United a favor by widening the gap between them and Manchester City to 8 points.
Sunderland has virtually nothing to play for in the Premier League this season. However, they do like putting up a show for their fans and will definitely like to claim another scalp by taking points against a side from the top four. Sunderland last week drew 3-3 against Manchester City. They in-fact held a 1-3 lead but gave it all away.
Chelsea to resume fourth-spot hunt after Spurs setback and boosting Benfica win
Chelsea were certainly not at their best in midweek but that victory against Benfica was vital – not only for their Champions League aspirations but for their confidence in the final moments of the 2011/12 campaign.
Chelsea, who are alive in the FA Cup, suffered a setback in the English Premier League last weekend. Their goalless draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur prevented them from pushing closer to their fourth-place dream finish.
All right. A win for the Blues will not catapult them to 4th but will bring them within striking distance of Spurs threatening that precious berth and a lucrative Champions League eligibility.
The English Premier League standings have once again changed with two North London clubs swapping places in the top four. Tottenham’s draw against Stoke coupled with Arsenal’s win over Everton saw Arsenal leapfrog Spurs into third. Chelsea was on a good run of form but their loss to City saw them fall further behind the top four.It will all begin with a lunch time kick-off at Stamford Bridge. The Blues, having lost to Manchester City in midweek, failed to close the gap against fourth-placed Tottenham. Chelsea remain fifth in the standings with 49 points while London rivals Spurs have dropped to fourth with 54 points, 1 point behind new third place tenants Arsenal.
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will both be looking to get back to winning ways. The Blues had a really tough time at the Etihad Stadium and they lost out only just. Spurs, meanwhile, proved shaky again as Stoke City held them to a 1-1 draw.
Manchester City vs Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur vs Stoke City will kick off simultaneously. At the Etihad Stadium, the Citizens will try to make the most of the home factor to defeat the Blues. Earlier in the season, Chelsea taught a lesson to Roberto Mancini and his men.
A repeat of such an outcome would only be good news to title aspirants, Manchester United. Following their shocking defeat to Swansea City earlier in the month, let’s just say that Manchester City have no room for more mistakes. That would put them 4 points behind the Red Devils.
Wednesday night’s battle in Manchester will be like a final for both teams but Chelsea perhaps have the advantage. The Blues don’t only have more experience than City. They are also in great revival form following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas a few weeks ago.
Spurs required two legs to fend off Stevenage in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The first leg ended goalless. In the second leg, when Joel Byrom opened the score for Stevenage, fans must have thought they were in for a shock result. Spurs came roaring back instead and scored thrice, one of which was scored from the penalty spot by Emmanuel Adebayor, sandwiched in between two Jermain Defoe goals.
The 2011/12 Carling Cup champions haven’t won in the English Premier League since January this year. It’s incredible, it’s unbelievable but it is absolutely true. Their 3-0 defeat of Wolves–in reply to a string of poor results against Manchester City, Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers–stands as Liverpool’s last win thus far.
