Manchester United manager Luis Van Gaal believes his men can still win the Premier League this season.

The Red Devils beat their bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday to revive their hopes of securing at least a top four finish. However, manager Luis Van Gaal insists that his men can look beyond the top four and secure the Premier League title that has eluded them since Sir Alex Fergusons’s resignation from the bench.

Wayne Rooney’s 78th minute strike was all the visitors needed to overcome their fierce rivals and move seven points behind league leaders Arsenal. Rooney’s goal was his first at Anfield in 10 years. Additionally, thanks to the solitary goal, he became the player with the highest number of goals for a single club in the Premier League (176) after surpassing Thierry Henry’s record of 175 goals for Arsenal.Highest top scorers for a Premier League club

Speaking during the post-match press conference, the former Bayern Munich manager revealed:

"To beat Liverpool is always important.’’

''Today it was important because our competitors lost points and when the gap [at the top] is like this we can overturn that. That is what I'm thinking."

The 30-year-old blasts the ball past Liverpool's Henderson at Anfield to give Man Utd a 0-1 victory over their rivalsRooney scores for Man United against Liverpool at Anfield Asked whether he thought his men had the capacity to compete for the title this season, he added:

"We have a lot of matches to go. We started 2015 very good, with a lot of wins and draws - we didn't lose.’’

"This game will give a huge boost to the players, the fans and to everyone connected with Manchester United - and we have to continue, of course.’’

"That will not be easy, as we saw today, but we can do it because we showed every week that we can do it."

Van Gaal has had an impressive record against Liverpool ever since he arrived at Old Trafford. The Dutch tactician has won four out of their four meetings with the Merseyside club. Last Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s men dominated the game but failed to convert their chances. On the other hand, The Red Devils had only one shot on target which created the only goal of the match. Luis Van Gaal’s men will now face Southampton at Old Trafford next weekend while Liverpool travel to Carrow Road stadium to face Norwich City.
