This was Gerrard's sixth red card in his Premier League career. He was sent off 39 seconds after coming into the game.

Steven Gerrard’s last game with Liverpool against Manchester United only lasted 38 seconds on Sunday. The Reds’ captain had come into the field as a sub in the second half and before all fans returned to their seats, Gerrard had been sent off with a red card

"I don't know what caused it. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle,” Gerrard said.

Stevie G knows he reacted ruthlessly by stomping on Ander Herrera when he was already on the ground. Apparently, he will also miss Liverpool’s next three games. That is bad news for a team that is in the fight for a spot in the top-four.

"I need to accept it; the decision was right. I've let down my teammates and the fans. I take full responsibility," Gerrard mentioned to Sky Sports.

Leaving his team with only ten men made it really complicated for Liverpool to try and win the game, let alone, tie it. They were already trailing by one when Gerrard got on the field, Manchester extended their lead 15 minutes after he left.

Juan Mata’s brace gave the Red Devils a comfortable lead in a field (Anfield) where fans try to make it a living hell for Manchester United. Daniel Sturridge’s late lonely goal did not damage Man United’s chances of winning the game.

"I shouldn't say more about it really. I've just come out here to apologize to the dressing room and supporters," Gerrard said.

Liverpool’s coach Brendan Rodgers immediately accepted his apology. The 34-year-old player is due to travel to Los Angeles and join L.A. Galaxy as soon as he is done with The Red this season.
