Manchester United look to beat the Gunners to the signature of the highly-rated Sporting Lisbon ace William Carvalho

Manchester United look to beat English Premier League rivals Arsenal to the signature of Sporting Lisbon's star midfielder William Carvalho, eyeing a £24m move for the 22-year-old.

The Portuguese starlet, who took part in his national team's 2014 World Cup campaign, putting in a commanding performance in Selecção das Quinas's group stage match against Ghana, has long been sought after by England's elites.

The Red Devils appeared favorites to sign Carvalho during Scottish manager David Moyes' disastrous spell at the helms of Old Trafford, but after the arrival of Louis Van Gaal, who made Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal top priority, Wenger moved into pole position to sign the Leões ace .

Despite reports claiming the Manchester side are in serious talks to bring the Chilean star to Old Trafford, a deal for the 27-year-old may prove challenging, thus forcing the Dutch boss to turn his attentions back to Carvalho in an attempt to recruit a midfield marshal before the transfer window shuts close on September 2.

After witnessing his team fall to two disappointing losses in his first three games in charge, including that embarrassing 4-0 defeat to League One side Milton Keynes Dons, Van Gaal looks to strengthen up his midfield and further add quality signings to the record-breaking £59m Angel Di Maria acquisition.

Arsenal, who lack a combative midfielder in their ranks, were believed favorites to sign Portuguese midfielder, especially after losing out in the race to sign Sami Khedira, who is set for a Real Madrid stay.

Carvalho's current employers, Sporting Lisbon are willing to cash in on the 22-year-old in order to raise cash for the club, slashing his price tag from the £37m release clause stipulated in his contract with Sporting to £24m
