Thursday April 19 2012,
Tags: Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao
On Thursday Apr 19, Sporting Clube de Portugal meet Athletic Club Bilbao at 8.05 pm at Estádio de Alvalade XXI in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals first leg.
Last season, there were four Iberian teams in the semi-finals, and the final was totally Portuguese. This season, Spanish sides will certainly try to achieve the same goal. Sporting’s mission is to prevent this historic achievement from happening.

To fulfill the task, Sporting has to maintain their winning strike. In fact, since Ricardo Sá Pinto took charge of the team in mid-February, Sporting have recorded eight victories in a row. They have managed to score 13 goals and concede only one, a penalty in the last home match against FC Metalist Kharkhiv.

The venue is the Estádio de Alvalade XXI. We’re entering the final stages of this important competition. Teams are very similar and could give us balanced and tough matches.

After the quarter-finals draw, Sporting Clube de Portugal seem to have reasons to be optimistic about. Sporting are apparently stronger with a higher ranking position but nothing can be taken for granted. Manchester City are bigger on paper than Sporting Lisbon but results in the Last 16 told otherwise.

Metalist comes to Lisbon to once again try to beat the odds as they did against Olympiacos in the previous round.

Europa League: Will Man United and Man City make comebacks to reach Last 8?

Chelsea made a perfect demonstration of a comeback in the Champions League on Wednesday. Will Manchester United and Manchester City emulate the Blues in the Europa League?

Manchester City and Manchester United are both striving for UEFA Europa League quarter-finals tickets.Firstly, the Red Devils and the Citizens are probably not on the same page. It seems as if City are more likely to crash out from the competition than their local rivals. A simple look into Mancini’s injury list and available squad could reveal it all.

The team will miss Lescott and Kompany in defence while Pablo Zabaleta and Gareth Barry will also not play due to injury. With these crucial absences, Manchester City may opt for an ultra-offensive approach. When you have players like Mario Balotelli and David Silva playing on a pitch in a must-win game, it’s normal to expect a generally good reaction.

Sporting Lisbon To Face Benfica Without Coach Paulo Sergio

Monday February 21 2011,
Tags: Portuguese Liga, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Paulo Sergio
Sporting Lisbon Coach Paulo Sergio will not be able to guide his team against Benfica tonight. The manager has to serve a ban following an incident which happened against Olhanense.
Paulo Sergio has been accused of having tensions with his key players. On February 12, when Sporting played away to Olhanense, it was reported that Paulio Sergio and midfielder Simon Vukcevic had a dispute over a substitution issue. But speaking to the BBC, the Sporting Lisbon coach denied such claims as he explained:

“It was just that the player, which was a surprise to me, showed he wasn't able to do the second half. We don't argue, we don't have any discussion in the locker room.

“That's all it was and it surprised me that he wasn't okay to play the second half. But there was no problem with Vukcevic.”

Sporting Lisbon vs Benfica: We Want The 3 Points – Sporting’s Matías Fernández

Monday February 21 2011,
Tags: Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Liga Sagres, Matias Fernandez
Sporting Lisbon’s Matías Fernández believes his team’s clash against Benfica will be hard, but has affirmed that all the Lions wanted were the 3 points.
Sporting currently sit in 3rd position in the Liga Sagres table, but a poor form has placed them 12 points behind the Eagles, who have 45 points at the moment. The Green and Whites have won only 2 of their last 5 matches, while Benfica have stood tall in their last 450 minutes of challenge.

Certainly, statistics and facts go against the damaged Sporting Lisbon side, but Matías Fernández is hoping that his team can arise and “stun” the Reds. Now, what remains is the execution of their task.

"It'll be a tough game,” he confessed. “Benfica are good. We drew in the Europa League (1-1 draw with Rangers in Glasgow), and now we want to make a good start and get three points.”

Sporting Lisbon vs Benfica: Big Gap Against Porto Means We Can’t Fail – Jorge Jesus

Monday February 21 2011,
Tags: Portuguese Liga, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Jorge Jesus, Porto
The big gap that exists between FC Porto and Benfica at the top of the Portuguese Liga explains that the Eagles can’t fail in Monday’s Derby de Lisboa. Coach Jorge Jesus is aware of that...
“We cannot fail,” said Benfica’s coach according to Portuguese media website Abola.pt.

“A derby is always a derby and the league’s table standings isn’t very important.

“However, the 12-points advantage that we have over Sporting give us some peace of mind. In my opinion, there’s no way Sporting can finish first or second [in the Portuguese Liga].

“The responsibility and pressure is more on us, Benfica, than on Sporting. The reason is that we have something at stake – the first position in the league.”

Rangers Vs Sporting Lisbon: We Do Not Want To Crash Out - David Weir

Wednesday February 16 2011,
Tags: Rangers, David Weir, Sporting Lisbon, UEFA Europa League
Rangers defender David Weir has rejected rejected speculation that Rangers would be happy to crach out of the Europa League to avoid a major fixture pile-up
Rangers will take on Sporting Lisbon tomorrow and the 40 year old David Weir knows that a victory could put them on the right track for an additional two games as the season approaches its crucial stage.

This situation has sparked fears among many Rangers supporters who do not want their club to lose out on the league just because of fixture congestion due to the European matches.

In 2008, Rangers marched onto the UEFA Cup final but they lost their near total domination on the league in the last few matches due to fatigue. This is one thing Rangers fans will never want to see again and some of them a prepared to accept defeat for Rangers in Europe.

Rangers vs Sporting Lisbon: Helder Postiga Fears Europa League Exit

Tuesday February 15 2011,
Tags: Helder Postiga, Sporting Lisbon, Rangers, Europa League
Not long after Pedro Mendes showed great confidence ahead of the Rangers vs Sporting Lisbon match, Portuguese striker Helder Postiga has warned his side against any form of sloppiness in defence.
Conceding and losing chances have been two major problems in the Sporting Lisbon club lately, and their weekend match against Olhanense was the perfect confirmation of their poor shape this season. Postiga, nevertheless, felt he made a good contribution in his side’s last encounter, but regrets the loss of the 2 goal lead he notched—which eventually faded out as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Postiga is aware that an improvement will not reshape his club, unless remarkable efforts are made. He also expressed his worries over Sporting’s form prior to their next Europa League test, and declared that a weak backline would throw them into a terrible nightmare.

Rangers vs Sporting Lisbon: I Don’t Fear Rangers – Sporting’s Pedro Mendes

Despite Sporting Lisbon’s poor result in their last match, midfielder Pedro Mendes has insisted that his side is ready to face Rangers in the UEFA Europa League.
Sporting Lisbon were actually leading 2-0 over lowly side Olhanense at the weekend in the Liga Sagres, but they suddenly allowed their opponents to come back into the game to settle for a draw in the most miserable manner. Rangers however enjoyed a great Saturday thanks to a 6-0 win against Motherwell at home.

Perhaps, there is no doubt that the Scottish giants are currently in much better form than the Portuguese strugglers. Yet, despite everything, Pedro Mendes has yet to overestimate his adversaries in the Europa League.

"Every season, there will be a Rangers game which finishes 5-0, 6-0 or 7-0... So I am not worried about that,” the former Porto player said. “It was just the same when I was there.

Benfica vs Sporting CP Lisbon Preview

Sunday September 19 2010,
Tags: Portuguese Liga, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Oscar Cardozo
Thirty-two-time Portuguese Liga winners Benfica lock horns with bitter city rivals Sporting Lisbon in the battle of the weekend in Portugal. Which team will edge the other?
Seating 13th in the 16-team table is one of the worst thing Benfica could have wished for. The Portuguese Liga defending champions just have 3 points from a possible 12 having lost thrice already to Academica de Coimbra, CD Nacional de Madeira, and Guimaraes respectively.

They started the defense of their domestic title on a bad note as they lost 2-1 on match-day one at home. Thankfully for Benfica fans, the team bounced back at the Estadio da Luz with a 3-0 victory over Vitoria Setubal which actually proved to be their sole win in the Portuguese Liga so far.

However, a boost-lifting 2-0 triumph over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Champions League could inspire Benfica ahead of this weekend’s titanic battle against Sporting Lisbon who are 5th in the table standings.
