Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid Match Preview

Angela Asante, Mar 26th 2010
Real Madrid will complete their local derby missions this weekend with a fixture against Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night.

This encounter promises to offer a lot of entertainment and drama as well. Atletico Madrid possess the title of being the only side to have beaten Barcelona in La Liga this season, going into Day 29.

The Red and White side of Madrid lost to Los Blancos in the 5 goal thriller that was played at the Vicente Calderon late last year, but can they avenge themselves on Sunday?

Atletico Madrid To Embarrass Real Madrid?

Atletico Madrid are actually on an inconsistent run, winning then losing by the same 4-1 score line over the past 5 match-days.

Addressing himself to the media, Coach Quique Sanchez Flores publicly took responsibility for Atletico’s on-and-off form in La Liga after his side’s thumping defeat against Mallorca. He then led his men to a 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

Atletico Madrid therefore clinched three vital points that fired them up to 8th in La Liga standings as they continue their hunt for a Europa League spot.

As for Real Madrid, they've known nothing other than victories since their 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao back in mid-January.

Up to now, the Spanish giants have counted 10 wins on the trot.

Considering those impressive statistics, how will Atletico Madrid prevent their neighboring rivals from extending their 100% home record to 15 La Liga games?

Can Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero - who scored in midweek - become heroes of the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu?

Real Madrid Eying Number 11 And Number 15

After seeing out Getafe 4-2 away from home, Real Madrid have regrouped for active preparations ahead of Sunday’s clash against Atletico Madrid.

They know how much potential their local rivals possess and as they look forward to clinching La Liga title, they have no other option but to keep winning.

Talking to bwin.com, Real Madrid’s leading goal scorer in La Liga, Gonzalo Higuain, explained:

“Atletico are a very good side. It’s hard to highlight one particular player in their team. We hope to punish their mistakes in the match to win it.

“The important thing is that we win to stay leaders. I hope we score many goals.

“Pellegrini told us that we have ten finals left in the competition this season. Our task is to win all of the them and eventually win the title.”

Real Madrid will record their 11th consecutive victory in La Liga and their 15th on home soil since the start of the season if they indeed steal all three points away from Atletico Madrid.

Now despite Los Blancos’ good figures in attack, some fans may worry about the team’s defensive lapses ahead of Sunday night's encounter.

Iker Casillas was criticized by many after conceding two goals to Getafe in midweek while some questioned the entire team’s second half display.

But this is what Manuel Pellegrini had to tell the media in his explanation:

“After the break, we reduced the intensity of the game. That’s because of the derby [against Atletico Madrid] which will come up [this weekend], and also because we wanted to avoid getting booked.

“It was very much unfair,” he continued as he commentated over Parejo’s tackle on Iker Casillas which led to a goal.

“I don’t think any Getafe player is proud of that action and I hope my team wouldn’t do the same thing in the same situation.”

Manuel Pellegrini will hope that the game on Sunday doesn’t turn into an ugly war.
