Cruz Azul vs San Luis Match Preview
Two teams already thinking about the postseason face off in Mexico City in a match that is but a mere formality for league leaders Cruz Azul and an opportunity for San Luis to scale places for a better matchup in the playoffs.
In sixteen games, Cruz Azul have obtained 36 points of the total 48 up for the grabs. With a goal difference of +19, the Blues boast the best plus/minus in the league. Their 32 goals also place them as the league's most potent offense.
San Luis' 26 points mean that they could overtake Santos and América with a win should both of those clubs falter in their weekend matches.
The Gladiators will have to rely on Michael Arroyo and his team-leading five goals to jump start the team's offense and have a chance against Cruz Azul.
San Luis have not been able to beat the Blues at the Estadio Azul since 2006.
Cruz Azul vs San Luis Match Report
The league leaders ended their spectacular season by beating another playoff bound team and setting a club record for most points obtained at home in a season, as Cruz Azul won all their eight matches at the Estadio Azul, including last Saturday's match against San Luis.
A single Horacio Cervantes goal two minutes from the death meant that a Cruz Azul team with a few second team players sprinkled in between the starters beat a full-force San Luis team.
The home team outshot the visitors 14 to 7 and held the ball for long stretches of the match, mostly unable to crack San Luis' defensive apparatus.
However, in the 88th minute, on came Cervantes' strike to keep the home unbeaten streak alive and propel the Blues to the playoffs on a happy note.
San Luis will enter the quarterfinals placing fifth in the table, and will face América.
