Sunderland vs Newcastle United Match Preview

Sunderland and Newcastle United both crashed out of the FA Cup to lower league opposition last weekend, and both will return their attentions to the Premier League.

Sunderland are surprise European contenders, currently sitting only three points off the playoff spots and will be looking to overturn the 5-1 defeat they suffered at St. James’ Park earlier in the season. Newcastle are five points further back, but will be looking to close that gap with a win here.

Sunderland defender Nedum Onuha could recover from a hamstring injury in time to play, while Lee Cattermole and Danny Welbeck are doubtful and will be assessed ahead of kickoff.

Cheik Tote is banned for Newcastle, while leading goal scorer Andy Carroll will miss the game with a thigh injury. Shola Ameobi, Jonas Gutierrez and Jose Enrique are all possible returners for the Toon Army.
