Match Preview

Morocco and Iran will take on each other on the second day of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. With Portugal and Spain set to lock horns in the subsequent game, this will arguably be the easiest encounter in the group.

It will be a historic night as that will be the first meeting between the Atlas Lions and Team Melli across any competition. Both sides will fancy the idea of getting the ultimate points in the game so as to keep their hopes of possibly upsetting either of Spain or Portugal and, subsequently, secure a spot at the knockout stage.

Ahead of the clash, Morocco seems to have a slight edge over the Iranians if forms are taken into consideration. Herve Renard's men topped their group in the African World Cup qualifiers without conceding a single goal in six games and enter Russia on the back of an 18-match unbeaten run.

Boasting the likes of Mehdi Benatia, Ayoub El Kaabi, Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi and Amine Harit in their ranks, expect the North Africans to stage a proper fight as they hope to defy the odds and progress out of Group B.

Iran, on the other hand, has not done badly for either in its build-up to Russia 2018. Carlos Queiroz's men caught the world's attention when they broke a FIFA World Cup Qualification record with 12 successive clean sheets in the Asia qualifiers. They have since featured in a series of friendly matches and their fortunes have not been as it were.

Regarding recent performances, Iran has managed three wins and two losses in their last five outings, and the Asians will aim at building on the 1-0 win they enjoyed against Lithuania in their last game. A lot of attention will be on the likes of Eredivisie top scorer Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Ansarifard, and Sardar Azmoun as they all possess the firepower to bag the goals for Carlos Queiroz's team.

All in all, a great show is expected from the encounter whose outcome will be critical to the final standings in Group B.
