It was on 15 April 1989, during the FA cup semi-final between Liverpool and Sheffield Wednesday at the latter’s Hillsborough stadium. 96 Liverpool fans were almost literally crushed to their deaths owing to what was put down as “failure of police crowd control.” The day is not forgotten to date, which is why several of this weekend’s kickoffs featured a 7-minute delay.

But there was nowhere in England where the disaster was commemorated better than at the grounds of the team that lost its fans on that fateful day in 1989 – Anfield.

The strong emotions that the remembrance of April 15, 1989 brings might explain why Steven Gerrad was in tears after the game. Maybe the Reds Captain was too moved by the profound way in which Liverpool fans showed their respect.

Gerrard in tears after 3-2 Liverpool win over Manchester City on April 13th:

But then again, we can’t ignore the fact that the Englishman has never laid his hands on the Premier League trophy, and that Liverpool are now agonizingly close to clinching it after their spirited 3-2 display vs Manchester City on April 13th.
