An exciting encounter in the Premier League will see Liverpool host sixth placed Tottenham Hotspur at the Anfield on Sunday, the 30th of March.

Liverpool and Tottenham HotspurPreview: Reds eyeing the top spot in the Premier League

Favorable results for Liverpool have provided them with a wonderful opportunity to end this week as the league toppers. Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace has left the door wide open for Brendan Rogers’ men who with a victory on Sunday can take their tally to 71 points and thereby occupy the top spot in the table.

The situation could not have come at a better time with the current season only six weeks away from conclusion. Liverpool have been rampant in recent weeks having won seven games in a row and are very close to clinching only their first league title in the Premier League era. The mood has definitely lifted at the Anfield but Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the kop faithful must stay calm and support the team in every circumstance.

"My message to the fans is to enjoy it," the Northern Irishman said.

"We need the fans to stay calm. I know when you want something so much, that's easier said than done.

"They haven't been in this position for a while. I can understand that sometimes there is that bit of trepidation and fear, but what we're looking to put in place here isn't just for one season.

"We're looking to put something in place for the longer term in order to have sustainable success.

"The atmosphere at Anfield can be a real cauldron and now we really need our army of supporters to really get behind us.

"If a player makes a mistake, then encourage him. That's so important, because if they get that encouragement then they will get on the ball again.”

However the Reds were nervy when they played Sunderland last time out, a team Liverpool were expected to thoroughly dominate. Steven Gerrard opened up the scoring for the Reds and the lead was doubled by Sturridge early in the second half. Ki Sung-Yeung gave the home side a scare when he scored later in the game, but Liverpool managed to end the match with all three points.

Their counterparts on Sunday Tottenham, will not have fond memories of their last meeting with the Reds. Liverpool demolished Spurs when the two sides met at the White Hart Lane back in December, the match also marked the end of Andre Villas-Boas’ reign as manager of Tottenham.

Sherwood replaced the Portuguese then and after a good start to his managerial career the Englishman has faced a few shortcomings marked by inconsistency. Spurs have lost three of their last five matches in all competitions which also included defeats at the hands of London counterparts Chelsea and Arsenal as well a 3-1 loss at the hands of Benfica which ultimately resulted in Tottenham being knocked out of the Europa League.

A Top four finish seems unlikely with Tottenham trailing fourth placed Arsenal by eight points. However Spurs scored a morale boosting victory over Southampton last time out which will definitely lift the spirits in the Spurs dugout. The Saints took a 2-0 lead over the North London side, but a spirited comeback saw Tottenham scoring thrice in return to earn a well deserved victory.

Tottenham will definitely have to be wary of a ‘SAS’ partnership which has caused havoc in the Premier League this season. Sturridge’s goal against Sunderland on Wednesday ensured that the duo become the first Liverpool strike pairing to have scored 20 goals apiece in a season since Ian St John and Roger Hunt achieved the feat 50 years back.

Suarez in particular has been unstoppable this season, the Uruguayan is the league’s top scorer with 28 goals to his name and was very instrumental when Liverpool dismantled Tottenham at the White Hart Lane earlier in the season.

Tottenham will continue to be without key players with all of Étienne Capoue, Kyle Walker (pelvis) and Erik Lamela (back) expected to remain on the sidelines. Emmanuel Adebayor who has been one of Tottenham’s better players in recent weeks is also a major doubt for the match. However there is positive news on the injury front with Mousa Dembele (knock) Vlad Chiriches (back) and Michael Dawson (hamstring) expected to return.

Jose Enrique is Liverpool’s only injury concern as the Spanish international continues to nurse his knee injury. Steven Gerrard will have to be careful with the Liverpool captain just one yellow card away from a two match ban.
