A much awaited North London Derby will feature Tottenham and Arsenal battle it out at the White Hart Lane in a Premier League encounter.

Preview: Both teams looking for vital three points

Arsenal and Tottenham will leave no stone unturned when they face each other on Sunday. The two clubs share an intense rivalry which has escalated over the years and at White Hart Lane we will see two teams giving in their all not just to earn a better position in the league table but also for the bragging rights.

For Arsenal this represents a good opportunity to cut the gap between themselves and league leaders Chelsea, after the Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

Tottenham on the other hand continue to chase their top four dreams and will narrow the gap down to just three points between themselves and their North London rivals if they can record a victory during the home encounter.

Both teams suffered European heartaches during the midweek and will be eager to respond back. Much for Arsenal’s persistence the Gunners were not able to get the better of European champions Bayern Munich with the second leg at the Allianz Arena ending in a 1-1 draw, marking the end of Arsenal’s participation in this season’s Champions League.

Tottenham on the other hand suffered a demoralizing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Benfica in a Europa League Round of 16 tie, a defeat which will greatly obstruct their chances of qualifying to the next round. Prior to that Spurs were also thrashed 4-0 by London rivals Chelsea, a match highlighted by some shambolic defensive display by the Lilywhites. Spurs will now be eager to bounce back and notch all three points with Everton and Man United close behind in the league table.

However form does not hold much of significance in a tie as such a point highlighted by former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor who now plays his trade at Tottenham. The Togo international appeared in a buoyant mood ahead of the tie and insisted that the players will give their all in order to down their fierce rivals.

"On Sunday I don't even think we will need a team meeting," he said.

"There are some games where you have to give a little bit of motivation to the players. But we know how good we are at home when it comes to Arsenal and we won't have to motivate anybody for this game.

"This the game that everybody will be talking about in London from this point: Tottenham v Arsenal, the north London derby."

"So I cannot see anybody telling me, 'Manu, you have to run. You have to give 100 per cent'.

"No one will need to tell me that. I know.”

"And people like Aaron Lennon, who has been here for ages, you won't have to tell players like him anything either. He knows how big it is for the club and the fans. To be honest with you, we are all looking forward to it.”

A statistic which bodes well for Spurs is the fact that Arsenal have failed to record a win at the White Hart Lane in their last five league matches. However the Gunners have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides including both the matches played between the two sides this season. A 1-0 victory at the Emirates in the league back in September was followed by a 2-0 victory in the third round of the FA Cup.

The fixture has proven to be goal frenzy in recent years and the 43 Premier League encounters between the two sides have resulted in 125 goals. However Tottenham in particular have not been that effective on the attacking front having managed just 37 goals in 29 appearances.

Arsenal will be without summer signing Mesut Ozil who suffered a hamstring injury in the match against Bayern and has been ruled out for three weeks. Aaron Ramsey was expected to return to the squad but has suffered a setback and will be unavailable, however midfielder and loan signing Kim Kallstrom has recovered from his back injury and will be in contention for selection.
Jack Wilshere will remain sidelined for the tie, but full backs Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal could both feature during Sunday’s derby.

Tottenham will be without a host of players with all of Michael Dawson, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela likely to miss out. However Moussa Dembele could make a return to the side, Younes Kaboul who received his marching orders in the match against Chelsea will also be available for selection after his red card was overturned during the week.

There are also doubts over full-back Kyle Walker and midfielder Sandro both of whom were withdrawn because of injuries in the Europa League tie against Benfica.
