Sweden prepares to face a solid Turkey side in a friendly on Wednesday. Will Zlatan Ibrahimovic be the man who decides the game?

Preview: Can Sweden beat the Turks in this prestigious friendly?

The Swedish were in touching distance of the World Cup. They took on Portugal and had a legitimate chance of qualifying as Zlatan Ibrahimovic took control. Unfortunately, at the other end of the pitch, stood the indefatigable Cristiano Ronaldo. Ibrahimovic, many a time PSG’s savior, struck twice but Ronaldo’s goals at the other end more than made up for the two he scored. Nonetheless, the match showcased his excellence. The Swede put in a brilliant showing against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League to once again lift PSG recently as well.

Ibrahimovic is the showpiece of Erik Hamren’s Sweden side. The Swedes have a rather inconsistent team. There is the talented Ola Toivonen up front. Marcus Berg remains as enigmatic as ever. Stars such as Johan Elmandar and Andreas Isaksson are nearing retirement age. The rest of the stars are also mostly 27 or older. Sweden needs to start building for the future.

They will face a team which is facing a similar problem. Take Arda Turan for example. The Atletico Madrid is a superb player. But Fatih Terim’s captain is 27 already. Also, Burak Yilmaz is 28 and Umut Bulut is 30. Turkey has stars for the future. Nuri Sahin, for example is still 25 and has many more years to give. Tolga Cigerci of Hertha BSC and Omer Toprak of Bayer Leverkusen are also players of the future.

Under Fatih Terim, the team has definitely progressed. However Terim could have perhaps taken the Turks further forward. Even now, he can do so as the squad he possesses is littered with talent.
However, the Turks were rather unimpressive in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Terim is undoubtedly a good coach. But there is room for improvement.

Can Terim guide his side to victory over Sweden? Or will Ibrahimovic once again pen a happy story for Sweden?
