World Cup winners Martin Peters, Bobby Charlton and Roger Hunt were on the score sheet the last time the Three Lions beat the Swedes in 1968.
“It was a crazy match. Sweden is celebrating, the players are celebrating”, said Ola Toivonen overjoyed after the win.
1) As at now, Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar leads the goal scorers’ chart. The Schalke 04 forward has netted 11 goals for his country in 594 minutes - imposing himself over Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who is 2 goals behind, having played 89 minutes less.
Together with Germany and Spain the Netherlands are still on track to record a perfect qualifying campaign. France (2004) and Czech Republic (2000) are the only countries to have recorded a perfect qualifying campaign in the history of the European Championships. In their penultimate qualifying match against Moldova the Dutch were not able to give their home crowd the expected football show. Thanks to a Klaas-Jan Huntelaar goal they grabbed a slim 1-0 victory. The Schalke 04 striker equaled Johan Cruijff’s record for all-time Dutch top scorer in European Qualifying matches with 12 goals.
Ibra, who’s been included in Sweden’s roster for the country’s UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers against Finland and the Netherlands, recently told Sportbladet:
The USA have booked their precious tickets for the final of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and they’ve done it in style. Colombia, North Korea, Brazil and more recently France all fell against the mesmerizing authority of Pia Sundhage’s powerful women—led by veteran Abby Wambach, safe pair of hands Hope Solo and super influential sub Rapinoe.
Why not go down the past few weeks to see how the United States made it from Group C to the Women’s World Cup final at the Frankfurt’s Commerzbank-Arena on July 17, 2011?
Match-day 1—How the United States set the tone
It’s important to kick-off a project on a good tone and that’s exactly what the USA did on June 28 when they went head to head with Asian rivals North Korea. Patience was key to the Americans’ success as the first period of the game ended goalless.
What Is At Stake For The Samba Queens
In 10, 20 or more years’ time, Brazil’s current female footballers and their supporters wouldn’t want to look back at this present period with much regret. The yellow jersey is being donned by top players who have earned recognition thanks to their formidable and consistent performances.
You can name Cristiane, Rosana, Fabiana… these are actually some of Brazil’s talents and they contribute in the development of Women’s Football around the globe. Above all, there is Marta. The 25-year-old striker is already a living legend—having won 5 consecutive FIFA World Player of the Year trophies amid over 20 individual and collective titles.
And yet, this great combination of stars hasn’t offered Brazilian fans what they desire most; and this is nothing but a FIFA World Cup title.
The United States and Sweden have actually met as much as 3 times already in the past 5 Women’s World Cup, making Wednesday’s encounter the fourth. But whereas some may be bored of this matchup, USA’s veteran midfielder Shannon Boxx is rather excited. She told FIFA.com:
Whereas North Korea and Colombia can only play for pride when both teams will clash on Wednesday night in Bochum, Sweden and the United States won’t have anything at stake but to clinch Group C’s top spot. In fact, USA lead the table on goal difference and they will be looking to maintain their current position—especially considering the structure of Group D where Brazil are poised to seal the first rank above Australia and Norway.
Group C: United States, North Korea, Colombia, Sweden
United States may be the favorites to prevent Germany from clinching their third Women’s World Cup trophy in a row. However, they have a tough task moving forward. The USA have fallen in an interesting group which contains North Korea.
Note that this Asian nation has made some serious progress in Women’s Football down the line and they are now considered to be a great threat. The Americans have certainly not forgotten what happened during China 2007—when North Korea gave them a real scare before an O-Reilly goal midway through the second half earn the USA a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
Germany and Sweden played to a 0-0 draw.
Germany is a youthful side with plenty of potential to win future major tournaments. Their youngsters were on show at the World Cup, and, on Wednesday night, more German youngsters will get their chance to shine on the international stage.
The Oranje didn’t live up to expectations against Moldova on Friday although they managed to grab all three points. They had to thank Huntelaar for that; incredibly, the striker has now scored more than 5 goals in the Euro 2012 qualifiers. But could the Netherlands rely on his influence again when they’ll face Sweden next?
Sweden have a game in hand like Finland in the table whereas all the other contestant in Group E have played 3 matches already. Tonight, the Swedes will create a vital advantage for themselves should they defeat the Netherlands away from home.
Portugal vs Denmark – Cristiano Ronaldo only has ONE option
After drawing 4-4 at home to Cyprus and losing 1-0 away to Norway, Portugal’s chances of entering the finals of the UEFA Euro 2012 are visibly slim. In addition to their problems, Carlos Queiroz’s replacement could be the source of instability issues among the squad; but although worries are piling up in the background, hope is not gone. Fortunately, Portugal still have one man who could lead them through the dark in their qualification for the European Championship, and that man is none other than Captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Surely, for neutral football fans and Portugal followers, it is always exciting to see the world’s most famous active soccer superstar. However, in the situation where the Selecção presently are, big names with major club attainments are just priceless add-ons to a wounded army.
The 2010 World Cup beaten finalists will entertain Moldova and Sweden in their next two qualifiers, but the Manchester City defender won’t take part in any of these matches. Nigel de Jong was previously criticized for his terrible tackles on USA’s Stuart Holden and Spain’s Xabi Alonso in the past. Now last week, the Sky Blue was accused of “going too far” with his clumsy challenge on Newcastle’s Ben Arfa.
Sweden and San Marino have met twice over the past. The 6-0 and 5-0 score lines in favor of Tuesday’s hosts are there to prove that San Marino will make a giant killing should they defeat Sweden this time out. Besides this historical fact, San Marino have just lost 5-0 to the Netherlands. It arguably looks as if they will stumble to yet another heavy defeat away to Sweden.
Who knows? Ibrahimovic may get his name on the score sheet as well or maybe Pontus Wernbloom – who scored a brace against Hungary last Friday – may continue his goal scoring form.
Table status and comparisons
Denmark are the surprise leaders in Group A. The Danes kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a goalless draw away to Hungary but quickly found their rhythm.
They are on 18 points, three clear above second-placed Sweden, thanks to an unbeaten run throughout the campaign so far.
Denmark have the best goal-scoring record in the group with fifteen goals in eight matches – six more than Sweden.
But Sweden possess the best defense in the table with only three goals conceded. Clean sheets against Portugal home and away, Albania away, and Malta in both legs have helped Sweden become the best defensive side in Group A.
Hungary host sweden as they sit nicely in 2nd place in Group 1 of the 2010 World Cup UEFA qualifying. Both Sweden and Portugal are the only threats for Hungary securing 2nd place in group 1 and having a chance to advance to the World Cup 2010. A Hungary win against Sweden and a Portugal win against Denmark will result in a big shake up in the group, and leave Hungary sharing top spot in the group with Denmark. Sweden will be fighting for their survival and Hungary will have to defend as the coming...
