Both Man United and West Ham earned themselves qualifications to the semi-final of the Capital One Cup and will in a buoyant mood when they lock horns at the Old Trafford.

Preview: Moyes looking to improve home record

The Red Devils have fared poorly at home turf this season and their Scot manager will be hoping for a better showing when United host the Hammers at the theatre of dreams. Moyes’ side has managed just three victories in eight league matches played at Old Trafford something which has contributed to their low position in the league table.

United lost successive matches against Everton and Newcastle in their last two league home encounters and another defeat on Saturday will be the first time since 1979 the Red Devils lose three home games on the trot.

However manager David Moyes has dismissed claims that his side are nervous ahead of the home fixture and is adamant that his players will give the United faithful something to cheer for on Saturday.

"The results have not been what we wanted," Moyes told reporters.

"Because of that, words like nervy, vulnerability, anxious all come to mind.”

"But I have never personally found that. The fans have backed the team. They know we need to play better and we need to score some more goals but it has not been for the want of trying."

The Scot has further reiterated that Man United’s busy fixture list will not harm the team’s performances.

"I remember the days when it was quite often two games in two days," said the Scot.

"I played in situations like that. We are complaining now because it is two in three days but we are used to playing at Christmas in our country."

United’s recent performances will have eased the pressure on the former Everton manager whose life at new club started off in a very atrocious fashion. But the Red Devils will now be hoping to keep the momentum going having scored victories in their last three matches in all competitions against Shakhtar, Aston Villa and Stoke City in Champions League, Premier League and league cup encounters respectively.

However much for their good recent performances the defending champions are still 10 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal and could really narrow the difference with the North London side set to face Chelsea on Monday.

West Ham will themselves be in a confident mood after coming from a goal behind to defeat Tottenham 2-1 in the Capital One Cup. Goal apiece from Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga sent the West Ham fans into rapture, who have now secured a place in the semi-final and are set to face a free scoring Man City side.

Their performances in the league on the other hand have been very uninspiring with West Ham having managed just a single victory in their last nine matches. Their performances away from home have been equally bad with the Irons notching just six points from the eight matches they have played.

Their antics have seen them slide down to the 17th place in the table just a position and a single point shy of the relegation zone.

Andy Carroll who is yet to play for the hammers this season will remain on the sidelines and will be joined by strikers Ricardo Vaz Te and Mladen Petric. Defender Winston Reid will also sit out due to an ankle injury whereas summer recruit Stewart Downing will also miss the match due to a calf injury.

Dutch international Robin Van Persie will continue to nurse his thigh injury and striker partner Wayne Rooney has also been declared a doubt after not making the trip to Stoke in the Capital One cup encounter.

Luis Nani has been ruled out of the tie after suffering a hamstring injury and will not be able to take part in a festive fixture list which sees United face West Ham, Hull, Norwich and Tottenham in the Premier League, Swansea in the FA Cup and Sunderland in the Capital One Cup.
Nemanja Vidic and Marouane Fellaini are expected to return to the squad but Michael Carrick will remain on the sidelines.
