Birmingham City produced a dramatic comeback to beat West Ham United in extra time and reach the Carling Cup Final.

Birmingham beat West Ham to win 3-1 on the night (4-3 aggregate) and will advance to face Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in the Final.
Carlton Cole opened the scoring to give West Ham a 3-1 aggregate lead, and have the Hammers seemingly on course to reach the final at half-time. Birmingham scored second half goals through Lee Bowyer and Roger Johnson to force extra time, while an extra time winning goal from Craig Gardner sent the home fans into delirium, and the Blues into the final.
West Ham arrived at St. Andrews defending a 2-1 lead from their first leg victory, and it was the Londoner’s who looked the most comfortable in the early stages. Zavon Hines had two early strikes on goal saved by Ben Foster, and England striker Carlton Cole was a handful for the Birmingham defense.
West Ham United can relieve the pressure on manager Avram Grant by advancing past Birmingham City and into the Carling Cup Final on Wednesday night.

West Ham will take a one goal lead into the game at St. Andrew’s, after winning the first leg of this Carling Cup Semi-Final 2-1 at Upton Park.
Victory for either team will present these players with the chance to write a significant chapter in the history of their club. Birmingham have not won a major honor since their League Cup win in 1963, while West Ham’s last major trophy came with their FA Cup win in 1980.
Birmingham will have to turn around their recent form to get the win they need to reach Wembley Stadium. The Blues are winless in their last three games, and were beaten 5-0 at Manchester United.
A late error by young Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster gifted West Ham a 2-1 edge after the first leg of their Carling Cup Semi-Final clash.

Liam Ridgewell had cancelled out West Ham midfielder Mark Noble’s opener, before Foster allowed Carlton Cole’s shot to squirm through his grasp in the 78th minute. West Ham scored their late winner despite having been reduced to 10 men when Victor Obinna was dismissed.
West Ham endured a lot of pre-game speculation about the future of their manager Avram Grant, who is aiming to make his second Cup Final in consecutive years. They looked to have put it to the back of their minds as they started strongly. Freddie Sears volleyed wide from an early chance before Matthew Upson forced a good reaction save from Foster.
West Ham took the lead inside the opening quarter hour as Noble fired an excellent volley past Foster from a tight angle. The Hammers continued to pour on the pressure, but a series of good saves from Foster kept the score down to 1-0 at half-time.
West Ham United and Birmingham City will clash in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

Reaching the final of this competition will present fans of either club with a chance to celebrate winning their first trophy in a long time. West Ham’s last trophy was the 1980 FA Cup, while Birmingham fans have endured an even longer drought. The blues last trophy listed was when they won this competition in 1963.
West Ham manager Avram Grant is enduring tough times, as the club are currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table. A trip to Wembley for the Carling Cup Final will lift some of the pressure, and likely boost morale in the dressing room. Grant has reason to believe he can achieve it as he led relegated Portsmouth to the FA Cup Final against all odds last season.
Grant rested a number of players during the weekend’s FA Cup triumph over Barnsley and could bring some players back for this game. Scott Parker, Matthew Upson, Carlton Cole and Frederic Piquionne are among those in line for a recall.
Liverpool might be without Steven Gerrard for at least 4 weeks following the captain’s injury while on international duty with England. In exchange, they are set to benefit from an amount of £500,000 as a pay-out from the English FA.

That piece of news broke out on Friday afternoon as the issue was confirmed. It has been reported that the money paid to Liverpool will rather come from an insurance scheme instead of coming directly from England’s FA.
That insurance scheme previously saw Spurs and Arsenal receive compensation for injuries picked up by Defoe and Walcott respectively. The case between Liverpool and England’s FA has perhaps been settled now through this pay-out deal.
Coach Fabio Capello also expressed his worry concerning the situation as he told the press:
Steven Gerrard picked up a late injury in England's defeat to France on Wednesday. Now the Reds are fuming over the English FA’s management of fitness issues.

Liverpool are in a delicate situation where they cannot afford to lose their key players. Whereas Fernando Torres is working to reach top form, Roy Hodgson and the rest of his players will have to make do without the presence of the man that has been Liverpool’s best player this season by far: Steven Gerrard.
The Reds’ fitness coach, Darren Burgess, burst out in fury as his messages on social network Twitter threw insults at the English FA and the Three Lions’ manager, Fabio Capello. Burgess judged Capello’s decision to play Steven Gerrard as “amateurish” and that what happened was “unbelievable from all associated with England and English FA with regards to SGs (Steven Gerrard’s) injury.” More of his comments read:
Manchester United will try to bounce back from their disappointed draw against Fulham when they host West Ham United in Saturday's late kick-off in the English Premier League. In the meantime, two of their non-first team players keep dreaming about their chances to become regular faces for the Red Devils.
Manchester United's reserve side defeated Manchester City 3-1 in a reserve fixture on Tuesday night. Youngster Tom Cleverley played a starring role as he continued to perform well so as to impress Ferguson and thus break into Manchester United’s starting XI. The 20-year-old England U-21 international spoke to MUTV after his side’s victory over City, saying:
“All I can do is to keep playing to my top performance level when I play, whether it’s for the reserves or for the first team. As long as I keep doing that, hopefully, the manager will see that I am doing well. Then, I’ll get a couple of chances here and there."
Tom Cleverley is not the only player that wants to break in Manchester United’s first XI. This summer’s most unexpected signing, Bébé, also dreams of making an impact at Old Trafford. When asked about his intentions as a Red Devil following his miraculous switch from the streets as an orphan to professional football, the former Vitoria Guimaraes striker explained:
With the season winding down Arsenal are beginning to gel as a team, just at the right time; West Ham meanwhile have shown their frailties lately and they face a second consecutive London derby.
Arsenal are on a good run of form at the moment with five consecutive wins in all competitions. Their recent 5-0 beating of Porto in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg reinforced the point that this club, despite up and down performances throughout the season, seems to be coming together at the right time.
Arsenal sit in third position in the English Premier League table on 64 points, two behind league leaders Manchester United, and even with Chelsea. Chelsea hold the second spot by virtue of goal difference, however, and they have a game in hand over both Arsenal and United.
No less a luminary than Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently observed that he fears Arsenal’s potential. "I have a suspicion that they might yet mount the biggest challenge” said the Scot.
West Ham have shown that no team can count on an easy victory at Upton Park, while Arsenal’s form remains good despite injury crisis.
London derby matches are coming thick and fast this festive season and West Ham, as luck would have it, will play their third derby match in two weeks, having been drawn against rivals Arsenal for this 3rd Round FA Cup tie.
Following Monday’s 0-2 defeat away to Spurs at White Hart Lane, West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola will be glad this match takes place at Upton Park, where the Hammers held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw less than two weeks ago.
West Ham had a good outing on that day, and although penalty kicks decided the tie, that heady result was one of the few bright moments in the Hammers’ campaign this season.
