A Bavarian derby is set to take center stage when the DFB Pokal moves into its second day of action in the Round of 16.

Bayern Munich will play away to Augsburg in the DFB Pokal on December 4, 2013.Preview: Is another tense derby on the horizon?

Bayern has put away most opponents with little trouble this season. Their results have progressively improved against Augsburg. In their final meeting in the 2010-11 season, Bayern beat Augsburg 2-1. The first meeting of the 2011-12 season finished 2-1 as well in favor of the European Champions. They went on to beat Augsburg 0-2 in the DFB Pokal and won their next meeting in the league 0-2.Both meetings in the current calendar years concluded with 3-0 home wins at the Allianz Arena.

In the most recent meeting, Jerome Boateng opened the scoring with a superb goal from a very narrow angle. Franck Ribery added the second from a free-kick. Thomas Müller added a gloss on the score when he converted a penalty in the 90th minute. One of the scorers from that day, Ribery's availability will depend on a late fitness test. Bastian Schweinsteiger, captain Philipp Lahm, Claudio Pizarro, Xherdan Shaqiri and Holger Badstuber will all be unavailable though. For Augsburg, Panagiotis Vlachodimos is starting to recover from tendon problems. Dominik Reinhardt has a hand injury. Jan-Ingwer Callsen Bracken and Jan Moravek are doubtful for the match.

Bayern previously lost to Augsburg in 1961 in the Oberliga Sud, 3-1. Augsburg will have to work very hard to repeat any such result. They will have to be wary of Bayern’s best player in the cup so far, Thomas Müller. The German has scored five of Bayern’s nine goals in the cup so far, adding one assist as well. In the first round, Bayern put away BSV Rehden. Müller scored a hat-trick following Xherdan Shaqiri’s opener while Arjen Robben added to the tally in a 0-5 win. In the second round, they beat Hannover, 4-1, with Müller striking twice either side of a Pizarro strike and Ribery adding one late on.

Augsburg beat RB Leipzig in the first round,0-2. Jan-Ingwer Callsen Bracken scored the first and Halil Altintop added a second. They beat SC Preussen Münster in the next round; Tobias Werner struck twice while Sascha Mölders added a third in a 0-3 win. They will be coming into this match on the back of a 0-0 draw against Hertha Berlin. Bayern will be coming into the SGL Arena on the back of a 2-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig in which they hardly had to break a sweat apart from a goal line clearance by David Alaba.

Bayern should win this one with ease. However, derbies are rarely clean affairs and if this goes down the way of their last meeting in the cup in which Ribery was sent off, the German champions will definitely not have an easy time against the Bavarian minnows.
