Preview: Falcao and co to end World Cup Qualifiers in style
The Cafeteros earned a place in the World Cup for the first time in 16 years after a sensational comeback inspired by their talismanic striker Radamel Falcao. Colombia were 3-0 down by half time, but redeemed their miserable performance in the first half with an excellent act in the second which saw them scoring three goals to earn them a valuable point which booked their place in the World Cup to be held in Brazil next year.
Teofilo Gutierrez opened the scoring for José Pekerman’s side before a Falcao brace settled the tie.
With Colombia having already qualified for the illustrious tournament, their match against Paraguay on Tuesday does not have much relevance owing to the fact that the fate of their counterparts has already been decided as well.
Los Guaraníes have had a woeful campaign to say the least which has seen them record just three victories in the 15 matches they have played and along with Bolivia who are at the foot of table, Paraguay have conceded the highest number of goals in the group (29).
In their last match against Venezuela on Friday, Víctor Genes’ side could only salvage a draw after taking the lead courtesy of a goal from Edgar Benitez. However an 83rd minute equaliser from Luis Seijaz denied Paraguay of their fourth victory of the campaign.
They will be against a side which has been on the top of their game boasting superstars like Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez who could both cause a menace in the Paraguay half if played on Tuesday.
Last time the two sides met, was in October last year when Colombia strolled through an easy victory courtesy of a brace from their star striker Falcao who has scored nine goals so far in World Cup Qualifying games.
