Chile wiped away the memories from their thrashing to Uruguay with a well-deserved victory over Paraguay in Santiago.

Chile returned to winning ways after beating Paraguay 2-0 in front of 45,000 fans at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago on Tuesday. The Chileans, who had been trounced 4-0 by Uruguay on Friday, put on a good display to end doubts over the capacity of Argentine coach Claudio Borghi.
It had been a very difficult week for Chile, not only because of their heavy defeat at the hands of Uruguay, but because Borghi had expelled five players from his squad due to acts of indiscipline. However, they didn't allow this to affect them against Paraguay.
Chile started strongly, and looked extremely dangerous each time Alexis Sanchez touched the ball. The Barcelona winger caused havoc for the Paraguayan defense with his pace and trickery on the ball.

The Chileans know that anything less than the three points will mount heavy pressure on the squad and in particular on coach Claudio Borghi.
The Chileans came into the qualifiers with a strong reputation for playing swift attacking soccer, however, after three rounds of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers they have shown everything but that. Apart from their 4-2 win over Peru in Santiago, they suffered two heavy defeats, 4-1 against Argentina and 4-0 against Uruguay.
Despite this, they come into their clash with Paraguay with high spirits, as they intend to claim a much-need victory that would go a long way in healing some of the pain suffered.

Paraguay will be after their first victory of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador in Asuncion.

Paraguay take on Ecuador in Round 3 of the 2014 South American World Cup qualifiers, with the clear objective to claim the first three points of their campaign. La Albiroja didn't get off to the best start last month, having debuted with a 2-0 defeat to Peru in Lima, before scoring a late equaliser to force a 1-1 draw with Uruguay in Asuncion.
Due to those results, Francisco Arce, the new coach of Paraguay, will be obligated to secure a victory against Ecuador. Paraguay have consolidated themselves as one of South America's strongest sides over the years, much due to their hard-working attitude. In the 2010 World Cup, which was their fourth successive appearance on soccer's most important stage, they reached the quarter-finals only to be defeated by eventual world champions Spain.

Uruguay will be aiming to make it two in a row when it travels to Asuncion to do battle with Paraguay on Tuesday.

Copa America champions Uruguay have never won a World Cup qualifier in Paraguay before, however, their outstanding recent form means that they could make history at the Defensores del Chaco stadium.

Paraguay have been quick to appoint a new coach following the resignation of Gerardo Martino.

On Friday afternoon, it was reported that Martino had stepped down as coach of the Guaranies after his side fell 3-0 to Uruguay in the 2011 Copa America final. During a press conference, the 48-year-old man publicly avowed his decision to quit Paraguay’s national team as he stated the following:
“I am no longer the coach of the Paraguayan national team as of today. I can no longer contribute to everything we imagined when I took the reins of the national team.”
But the Paraguayan FA has taken no time at all to find Gerardo Martino’s successor. A few hours after Martino’s resignation, APF vice president Alejandro Dominguez issued a statement as he declared:
The Uruguayans have finally realized one of their wildest dreams after 16 years of dissatisfaction by demolishing Paraguay in the 2011 Copa America final.

At the start of the tournament, many were eyeing a final fixture involving either giants Brazil or hosts Argentina .There were shocks though as La Celeste progressed through the last stage of the contest thanks to an unbeaten run.
Having humbled the Argentines in the quarterfinals in a dramatic encounter, Uruguay were determined to finish their Copa America campaign in style. Fortunately for them, Paraguay proved to be too weak to cause them any harm in Buenos Aires.
Man of the Match Luis Suarez first scored the opener for his country after just 11 minutes, and by half time, the Uruguayans were leading 2-0 thanks to a strike from Diego Forlan. The Atletico Madrid forward netted another goal just a minute from additional time deep into the second half, only to seal what happened to be a comprehensible victory.
Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz has defended his side’s style of play ahead of Sunday’s anticipated 2011 Copa America final against Uruguay.

“It would not hurt me if we draw against Uruguay and then Paraguay win the match on penalties. Winning the Copa America is the goal, the rest does not matter,” Santa Cruz told reporters at a press conference.
Paraguay have not won a single game so far but their progress all the way to the final has widely been influenced by the mistakes of their opponents. The Paraguayans drew goalless against Ecuador and Brazil in the group stages while Venezuela’s late comeback on match-day 3 resulted in a 3-3 draw.
"It was a miracle, I still cannot believe it". The words of Paraguay's goalkeeper Justo Villar reflect that, In this erratic, unpredictable Copa America, the podium is still up for grabs.

Can Paraguay defy Uruguay's leadership this Sunday? I believe it wouldn't be wise for Paraguay to repeat the same defensive approach for the final that they used in the previous games, for Uruguay grows much stronger when they dominate the flow of the ball.
Uruguay has, in fact, been growing since 2006, when Oscar Tabarez became Celeste's boss. They were not only one of the main revelations in South Africa finishing fourth, but they've also qualified for 2012 Olympic Games for the first time in over 80 years.
Venezuela were far superior than Paraguay in the semi-finals, but Justo Villar and a little bit of luck (three Venezuelan shots hit the woodwork) stopped Los Vinotintos from reaching their first final. Without Juan Manuel Vargas (sent off against Uruguay in the last round), I don't think Peru stands a chance against Venezuela, the revelation of the competition.
Uruguay or Paraguay will be crowned champions of South America on Sunday.

Who gets to win the 2011 Copa America title? Uruguay might be tagged as favorites to do so but Paraguay’s chances to lift the trophy are well alive too. However, the combination of Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan and Muslera gives La Celeste Olimpica stronger muscles to succeed at both ends of the pitch.
In the quarter-finals of the Copa America, Muslera exhibited his goalkeeping skills as Argentina suffered the damage. In the semi-finals, it was Luis Suarez’s time to remind the public that Uruguay have the potential to score. This semi-final fixture could have featured Brazil and Chile…

Paraguay have a great chance of reaching the final of the 2011 Copa America. They have a good attacking line and that’s not all. Justo Villar has proven to be a closed gate in post for Paraguay.
His MOTM performance against Brazil emphasized Brazil’s humiliating exit. So will Villar bring minnows Venezuela back to earth?
Well, Venezuela have already made history by reaching the semi-finals of the Copa America for the first time as history can prove it. Who genuinely thought about La Vinotinto as prospective finalists in Argentina this year?
Brazil and Chile must secure the game in 90 minutes to avoid an awkward surprise this Sunday.

A smart, tactical football gave Peru and Uruguay the opportunity to outwit the alleged candidates and advance to the semi-finals. Despite showing some of their best football, Argentina and Colombia are out.
What's the logic behind these two unexpected results, and most importantly, what can Brazil and Chile learn from them? Argentina fell at Colon's "Elephant's Graveyard", a legendary stadium in which endless major teams have fell throughout history.
Brazil prepares for a tough clash against Paraguay. From a tactical point of view, I believe this game may resemble Argentina's, with the Scratch dominating the game while Paraguay try to take advantage of their aerial superiority.
Chile's coach Claudio Borghi misses playmaker Matias Fernandez, whose form was vital for La Roja to qualify as Group C leader. Do Chile have what it takes to defeat Venezuela, a goal neither Brazil nor Paraguay managed to achieve during the first stage?
Brazil and Paraguay meet in La Plata on Sunday afternoon.

Brazil vs Paraguay—so that’s a repeat of Group B’s match-day 2 encounter which occurred at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Cordoba. Both sides may boast of having the advantage over the other.
Paraguay were disgusted at losing their 2-1 lead against Brazil in the group stages while the Seleçao’s fans and media were angry at their team’s failure to get all 3 points. On Sunday, each side will exhibit their new plans. Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino aims to protect his defense from Brazil’s attack.
“In order that Neymar does not become a threat to us, the ball must not reach Ganso,” Martino analyzed this week.
How many people genuinely bet, before the start of the 2011 Copa America, that La Vinotinto would be confirmed quarter-finalists ahead of the Paraguay vs Venezuela match?

It’s incredible but true. The Venezuelans could be seen as favorites to win—perhaps not on paper, but overall as coach Cesar Farias explained ahead of match-day 3. AFP quoted the boss as saying:
“We have no suspended or injured players. We are adding positive things that allow us to keep on dreaming, and that means that we are doing something well, but we are not qualified.
“We have to be very focused with this good chance. In the first game the team had hold the result, the second we were more released, and the in third one will have to play with the result and with the pressure, which is less than Paraguay's.”
