The Argentine tactician could return to the international spectrum with Colombia.
The Colombian national team are still looking for a new coach to occupy the vacancy left by Leonel Alvarez when he was fired from his duties in mid-December.

Colombia's first priority was Gerardo Martino, but the coach rejected the offer in favour of a return to his beloved Newell's Old Boys. Due to this, Colombia now seek the services of Jose Pekerman.

"He is an excellent coach," Luis Bedoya, the president of the Colombian Football Association, told Colombian newspaper El Tiempo. "To count with his services would be very good."

Since the dismissal of Alvarez, after a horrible start to Colombia's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign, Colombia have been after a coach with vast international experience. Pekerman fits perfectly into this category, after having coached the Argentine national team between 2004 and 2006.

Junior, who had beaten Once Caldas 3-2 in Barranquilla on Sunday, came into the title decider with a slight advantage, but right at the conclusion of a hotly contested first half striker John Pajoy appeared to level the series for Once Caldas.

Carlos Bacca converted two penalty kicks to lead Junior to a crucial comeback victory over Once Caldas in the first leg of the Colombian final on Sunday.
Junior are just a step away from winning the Colombian championship for the seventh time after coming from two goals down to defeat Once Caldas 3-2 in the first leg of the final in Barranquilla on Sunday.

Paraguayan midfielder Jorge Nunez scored twice in the 19th and 39th minutes to give the visitors a healthy advantage, but Junior rallied with two goals from striker Carlos Bacca in the 44th and 57th minutes, while midfielder Vladimir Hernandez scored their other goal in the 53rd minute.

Nunez put Once Caldas ahead with a well-executed free-kick, and it seemed that the side from Manizales would go into the break with a two-goal lead when the Paraguayan struck again. However, Bacca pulled a goal back for Junior when he converted a penalty kick on the stroke of half-time after Mauricio Casierra handled the ball in the area.

Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero were on target as Argentina rallied to beat Colombia in Barranquilla on Tuesday.
Argentina came from behind to defeat Colombia 2-1 in an action-packed 2014 World Cup qualifier at the Metropolitano stadium of Barranquilla on Tuesday.

Argentina started strongly, controlling the flow of the game as they tried to dominate their opponents. The Argentines played attractive one-touch soccer, and looked dangerous each time they moved forward, however, their attackers, particularly Lionel Messi, couldn't break through the resilient Colombia defense.

Colombia vs Venezuela Report

Colombia were held to a frustrating draw by Venezuela in a match played under torrential rainfall.
Colombia could only afford a 1-1 draw with Venezuela in the third round of South American qualifying for Brazil 2014 at the Metropolitano stadium in Barranquilla on Friday.

Despite torrential rainfall, Colombia started strongly and went ahead in the 11th minute when after a fine interchange of passes, Freddy Guarin sent a long-range missile into the top right hand corner of Renny Vega's goal. Guarin dedicated the goal to Atletico Madrid striker Falcao, who missed the match due to injury.

Venezuela tried to react after conceding the goal, particularly through Cesar Gonzalez and Juan Arango, who both looked very lively. Colombia for that matter intended to double their advantage and would have done so had Vega not kept out goal-bound efforts from Jackson Martinez, Dorlan Pabon and Teofilo Gutierrez.

Argentina suffer Di Maria blow ahead of Bolivia and Colombia qualifiers

Argentina will be without Angel di Maria for this month’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Colombia.
The Real Madrid winger has ruled himself out from Sabella’s roster due to injury. Di Maria featured in Madrid’s 7-1 beating of Osasuna at the weekend. He produced 3 assists but also picked up a knock. Di Maria eventually had to be substituted early in the second half of the game.

During the post-match interview, Jose Mourinho spoke about the Argentine’s injury. He was quoted as saying:

“He has a hamstring injury. We will have to wait for results of further tests, but I have enough experience to realize that he will be unavailable for some time.”

Alejandro Sabella makes changes to Argentina squad for WCQ's

Argentina will look slightly different than how they did in the opening round of South American World Cup qualifiers when they face Bolivia and Colombia next month.
Los Albicelestes revealed both of their faces in Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifying earlier in the month, and it seems that coach Alejandro Sabella wasn't satisfied with what he saw, as he has made several changes to his squad to confront Argentina's two upcoming fixtures against Bolivia and Colombia.

The two most important inclusions were that of Fernando Gago and Ezequiel Lavezzi, of Roma and Napoli, respectively. Gago, who participated in the 2011 Copa America, returns to the side after an injury setback. Lavezzi, who was also part of Argentina's squad for the competition also makes his return. Meanwhile, Sabella decided to call-up Pablo Guinazu of Internacional of Brazil and Luciano Monzon of French side Nice.

Colombia begin their road to Brazil 2014 with a tricky trip to La Paz where they will meet hosts Bolivia at the Hernando Siles stadium on Tuesday.

What went wrong with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia & Chile at the Copa America?

This is not what the majority of the public—led by supporters of the strongest teams—wanted to see. Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Chile are all out of the 2011 Copa America!

Uruguay stunned Argentina and are now favourites to win the 2011 Copa America trophyHow it happened

Argentina had raised early doubts about their chances of winning the competition when Bolivia and Colombia both held them to draws. But having bounced back in style against Costa Rica, hopes got rekindled until Uruguay had the last say in the quarter-finals.

Even Lionel Messi’s majestic performance couldn’t destroy La Celeste Olimpica as Tevez’s penalty miss in the shoot-outs sealed Argentina’s exit. One could now wonder about Sergio Batista’s future with the Albiceleste.

In the meantime, Colombia might find it hard to face reality. What really prevented them from finding their way against Peru? After qualifying from the group stages with 7 points, football fans and pundits had backed the Colombians to maintain their composure and at least reach the semi-finals. The truth, however, is that Los Cafeteros have allowed the Peruvians to keep dreaming at the 2011 Copa America.

Colombia vs Peru Preview

Colombia vs Peru will open the quarter-finals stage at the 2011 Copa America.
Colombia could be regarded as the 2011 Copa America’s best teams so far. They’ve shown some kind of consistency and progress in their form. Remarkably, the Colombians are yet to concede a goal—which explains why they are also yet to lose. It would be cruel for them to face defeat in the knock-out stages of the tournament; that’s when it counts most.

“The Colombian fans must stay trustful and calm. We are not the best, we are not the worst and we are not in the final yet,” said a cautious Falcao earlier this week.

“We have just moved into the second stage [of the Copa America] and we need to have our feet on the ground. If we want to aspire to progressing [in Argentina] we have to beat anyone.”

2011 Copa America: Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Peru Reach The Quarter-Finals

Colombia advance to the knockouts topping their group, and set a four-point requirement for the next stage
Colombia reaches the second stage with seven points, and leaves Argentina and Costa Rica struggling to secure the last remaining place for the quarter-finals. The winner takes all this Monday in Cordoba.

Who could have expected Venezuela as Group B leader? Even if Brazil and Paraguay end up as leaders with five points, the Venezuelan squad has enough points to secure qualification.

Remember that not only the teams finishing first and second in each group advance to the quarter-finals, but also the two best-placed thirds. Anything but a victory leaves Argentina as the worst-placed third, with three points.

Considering Costa Rica lost their opening game, another defeat leaves them with three points. Four points gives automatic qualification at this point, a requirement none of the three alleged candidates (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) have met so far.

2011 Copa America: Qualification At Stake As Bolivia Faces Group A Leader Colombia

Sunday July 10 2011,
Tags: Group A, Radamel Falcao, Gustavo Quinteros
The Colombian squad secures the top position of the group upon a victory. Bolivia must bag the three points to remain eligible for the quarter-finals.
Unlike his fellow Bolivian colleague, Colombian coach Hernan Dario Gomez repeats the same formation for the last game of the group stage.

After rescuing an important point against Argentina in the opening game, Bolivia was defeated by Costa Rica 2-0. Only the full scoring can help Bolivia claim their place among America's fittest eight, but the Bolivians have not celebrated a victory in the Copa America since 1997.

Even a defeat by the minimum difference grants Colombia a ticket to the knockouts. Even though he played a significant role in the first two games, we're yet to see the best of Radamel Falcao with Colombia.

Bolillo Gomez has found in the interaction between Abel Aguilar, Freddy Guarin and Dayro Moreno the perfect weapon to pierce any opposing defense. Bolivian defenders must keep them under a close watch, especially when they build the attack from the wings. Their ability to cross a ball becomes deadly when one consider Adrian Ramos or Falcao himself are likely to be lurking into the box.

What can Bolivia do to stop Colombia from bagging the three points? I believe they must meet their rival on equal footing. Juan Carlos Arce was not able to associate as expected with Marcelo Martins against Costa Rica, do you think Quinteros should return to his previous scheme for what could be their last game in the Copa America?

Colombia vs Bolivia Preview

Friday July 8 2011,
Colombia and Bolivia will open the action on match-day 3 of the 2011 Copa America with a game in Santa Fe.
Colombia and Bolivia have each scored one goal only; and this occurred on match-day 1. Coincidentally, both teams also avoided defeat against Argentina. So when they’ll battle against each other in Santa Fe on Sunday, which team will have the edge?

As of now, the Colombians lead Group A at the anger of Argentina’s press and supporters. However, as much as they may have one foot in the quarter-finals, Los Cafeteros are in danger of suffering a big blow.

Should they lose to Bolivia and should Argentina beat Costa Rica in the group’s final encounter, Colombia will find themselves in third position. In this case, their fate won’t be in their hands anymore although they’d still stand a big chance of qualifying among the best 2.
