Preview: Los Cafeteros to join Argentina in Brazil this Friday?
Colombia are reaping the benefits of top quality performances and consistency over the past few years. They are very likely to be seeded ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup group stage draw in December. Keeping their position among the world’s seven best nations in the FIFA Ranking come October 17 would assure that.
The Colombians, who moved two places down in the September 2013 release, will be motivated to put on a good show against Chile this Friday before ending their World Cup qualifying campaign away to Paraguay on October 15.
Last month, Argentina became the first South American team to book their place at the World Cup. Los Cafeteros will be looking to join the Albiceleste on Matchday 15 by pulling five points clear of third-placed Chile.
Currently, Colombia possess 26 points and like the Chileans who are only two points behind, they are mathematically assured of not finishing outside the Top Five in the CONMEBOL table. A win or a draw would be enough for Radamel Falcao and company to confirm their appearance in Brazil 2014.
The visitors are on fire, picking maximum points from their last four World Cup qualifiers. Coach Nestor Pekerman is aware of the Chileans’ amazing form and has urged his side to perform on Friday.
“We're going to make every last effort to be in the World Cup,” said the manager.
“Chile is one of the toughest rivals and now they are playing well.”
