Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas arrives in Italy to kick start Napoli challenge

The explosive striker faces stiff competition to earn himself a place in Napoli's starting eleven.
Chilean attacker Eduardo Vargas arrived in Italy on Thursday to incorporate himself into his new club Napoli, who signed him from Universidad de Chile for $14.8 million.

A few hundred fans greeted the player upon his arrival at the Fiumicino airport, where Vargas briefly signed some first autographs. The nippy striker intends to make a name for himself at Napoli and in the Italian Serie A. The player expressed his delight to have made the move to one of Europe's toughest leagues.

"I'm happy, really happy, to be here in Italy," said Vargas, who will receive a salary of $1.4 million per year.

The 22-year-old is expected to join his new team-mates on Friday, and he could make his Napoli debut next Thursday in the Coppa Italia clash with Cesena.

Universidad de Chile vs Cobreloa Calama Report

Universidad de Chile lifted their fifteenth Chilean championship after thrashing Cobreloa at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago on Thursday.
Universidad de Chile capped off a remarkable year by winning the Chilean Clausura championship after thrashing Cobreloa 3-0 on Thursday. In winning the title, la 'U' made history in becoming the first team from Chile to win three titles in a single year, with the Chilean Apertura championship and the Copa Sudamericana.

After fighting out a goalless draw with Cobreloa in Calama in the first leg of the final on Monday, Universidad de Chile proved much superior to their opponents in the return leg in front of 50,000 fans at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago.

The Chilean giants cruised to a comfortable victory thanks to first half goals from Gustavo Canales, Eduardo Vargas and Matias Rodriguez, to obtain their fifteenth national championship.

Cobreloa and Universidad de Chile fought out a goalless draw in the first leg of the Chilean Clausura championship final at the Estadio Municipal de Calama on Monday.

It was a hotly contested final between two solid sides who battled in the midfield for large part of the match. Cobreloa proved the stronger team on the field, however, they couldn't take advantage of their goal-scoring opportunities.

Cobreloa came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 61st minute, when Diego Barrios connected to a precise cross with a powerful header, but although his header seemed to beat Universidad de Chile goalkeeper Johnny Herrera, it didn't beat the post.

Luis Pinto converted a superb hat-trick to give Chile a dramatic win over Paraguay in La Serena on Wednesday.
Chile obtained an important 3-2 victory over Paraguay thanks to a superb hat-trick from striker Luis Pinto. The friendly match took place in the Northern Chilean city of La Serena on Wednesday.

Claudio Borghi, the Argentine coach of Chile, fielded a side made up of home-based players, while on the other hand Francisco Arce, the coach of Paraguay, selected a relatively experienced side.

The standout performer of the match was Pinto. The talented O'Higgins striker opened the scoring for Chile in the 19th minute, while adding two more goals to his personal account in the second half. Meanwhile, Paraguay's two goals came in the space of four minutes early in the second half, through Edgar Benitez and Julio Cesar Manzur.

Alexis Sanchez wants to continue to win titles with Barcelona

The Chilean ace has already won three titles since joining the Spanish giants in July.
Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez expressed his desire to continue winning titles with Barcelona. Even though the former Udinese winger has only been at the European champions for five months, he has already won three titles with them.

"I'm very happy with the three titles, but we have to continue to add more. I don't think about stopping, neither does the team," affirmed Alexis in the airport of Santiago, on his arrival to Chile to spend the Christmas holidays with his family.

With the Barcelona shirt, the Chilean has already obtained the Spanish Super Cup, The European Super Cup and more recently the Club World Cup. Alexis failed to participate in the final against Santos due to a muscle strain.

Eduardo Vargas scored twice against Liga de Quito in the final of the Copa Sudamericana to lead Universidad de Chile to a historic title triumph.
More than 50,000 fans witnessed Universidad de Chile thrash Liga de Quito of Ecuador 3-0 in Santiago on Wednesday to win the Copa Sudamericana, the first international title in the club's entire history.

The Chileans completely outplayed their opponents, winning the match with two goals from striker Eduardo Vargas, the highest goal-scorer of the competition, and another from Argentine midfielder Gustavo Lorenzetti at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago.

Having won 1-0 in the altitude of Quito last week, Universidad came into the title decider as the overwhelming favourites and they lived up to the expectation with an exceptional performance, which extended their unbeaten run to 35 matches.

The only goal of the match was converted by Universidad de Chile striker Eduardo Vargas right before the half-time whistle.

Universidad de Chile defeated Vasco da Gama of Brazil 2-0 in Santiago on Wednesday, to reach the final of the Copa Sudamericana, where they will meet Liga Deportiva Universitaria of Ecuador.

Having picked up a 1-1 draw in Rio de Janeiro last week, Universidad were the favourites to proceed to the final coming into the return leg. However, Vasco had different ideas, and pushed to the attack in large numbers as they searched for an early goal that would put them ahead.

Although they looked dangerous in the early moments of the match, Vasco began to fade as the match went on. Universidad, who have yet to lose a match in the competition, started to dominate their opponents as the half progressed, with their trademark attack-focused one-touch soccer.

Chile wiped away the memories from their thrashing to Uruguay with a well-deserved victory over Paraguay in Santiago.
Chile returned to winning ways after beating Paraguay 2-0 in front of 45,000 fans at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago on Tuesday. The Chileans, who had been trounced 4-0 by Uruguay on Friday, put on a good display to end doubts over the capacity of Argentine coach Claudio Borghi.

It had been a very difficult week for Chile, not only because of their heavy defeat at the hands of Uruguay, but because Borghi had expelled five players from his squad due to acts of indiscipline. However, they didn't allow this to affect them against Paraguay.

Chile started strongly, and looked extremely dangerous each time Alexis Sanchez touched the ball. The Barcelona winger caused havoc for the Paraguayan defense with his pace and trickery on the ball.

Chile will look to rebound from their thrashing at the hands of Uruguay with a tricky test against Paraguay in Santiago.
Chile will be desperate to wipe away the horrible image they left against Uruguay on Friday, when they entertain Paraguay at the Estadio Nacional of Santiago on Tuesday. The Chileans know that anything less than the three points will mount heavy pressure on the squad and in particular on coach Claudio Borghi.

The Chileans came into the qualifiers with a strong reputation for playing swift attacking soccer, however, after three rounds of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers they have shown everything but that. Apart from their 4-2 win over Peru in Santiago, they suffered two heavy defeats, 4-1 against Argentina and 4-0 against Uruguay.

Despite this, they come into their clash with Paraguay with high spirits, as they intend to claim a much-need victory that would go a long way in healing some of the pain suffered.

Uruguay vs Chile Report

Uruguay hammered Chile 4-0 in the third round of the South American World Cup qualifiers on Friday, with four goals from an absolutely spectacular Luis Suarez. Uruguay proved far superior to their opponents and could have won the match by an even greater difference.

Uruguay, who lifted the Copa America for the fifteenth time in July, once again demonstrated why they are currently amongst the best teams of the world. Even without the injured Diego Forlan, Uruguay produced electric attacking soccer, and not once allowed Chile to get into the game.

As was expected, the match commenced with an intense pace as both teams went looking for an early goal. Uruguay looked particularly dangerous each time they moved forward with Suarez and Edinson Cavani being their main danger men.

Claudio Borghi's side rebounded from their heavy defeat to Argentina last week, with a good victory that gives them three points from two games.

Goals from Waldo Ponce, Eduardo Vargas and Gary Medel put Chile in a comfortable position, before goals from Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfan made the game very interesting. However, Humberto Suazo restored Chile's advantage from the penalty spot to put the result completely beyond Peru.
