Colombia vs Ecuador livePreview: When CONMEBOL’s second and third-placed teams clash

Colombia could rocket to the top of the South American World Cup qualifying table with victory tonight. At this point, it is almost only a matter of time for them to secure a place in Brazil 2014.

The Colombians have 23 points from 12 games with a commendable (+14) goal difference. They have scored a massive amount of goals (21) and have the best defence in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers with only 7 goals conceded.

Ecuador’s stats are not as strong as Colombia’s. However, tonight’s visitors find themselves only a couple of points behind their opponents. They would go second in the standings if they manage to complete the double against Radamel Falcao’s side.

When both sides met in June 2012, a solitary goal from Christian Benitez made the difference. But the talented striker, who died in July this year, will not be available in flesh to help La Tri on Friday. However, his loss could be enough inspiration for the away team to win at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez.

The match was due to kick off at 16:30 ET but had to be delayed. The weather in Barranquilla has been very bad, with heavy rains pouring down and leaving the pitch totally soaked.
