The whole Rooney to Chelsea affair has become quite irritating for all those connected to Manchester United and the board needs to sort out this issue sooner rather than later.
Back in 2010, Manchester United were put under a similar dilemma when Rooney handed in his first transfer request and it was believed that the star man will have to be sold to a rival club. Although the whole issue was put to bed by Sir Alex Ferguson, its déjà vu again for the Red Devils as the club’s top earner wants to leave Old Trafford again.

It is not surprising in the world of football to see a player hand in a transfer request but in case of Rooney, it is bound to cause a lot of chills, peppered with ramifications.

So far, Rooney has been missing out on United’s preseason games because of a ‘supposed’ injury which makes the whole situation quite strange in the eyes of those who monitor the whole transfer window activity with enthusiasm. At the end of last season, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that the hot headed striker had handed in a second transfer request.

In came Chelsea who have now made a second bid for the striker who is yet to issue a come and get me plea publically. Jose Mourinho is very keen on having the former Everton man at Stamford Bridge and though no signals have come out of Rooney’s camp, it is quite evident that the player wants out and might have made up his mind a long time ago.

Although United have rejected both bids from the aforementioned club, one has to feel why is it so necessary for the club to keep a hold of a player whose heart is no more at the club. A player who is unhappy will never perform at his optimum level and it is wise if he is allowed to leave to a club where he might feel loved once again.

However, one also has to think about United’s perspective on the whole situation. Selling a star player to a rival club in England is not a small move and it is quite understandable that the Red Devils do not want that to happen.

Arsenal made the mistake last year when they sold their star player Robin Van Persie to Man United and in doing so gifted their rivals the league title.

Regardless, time is high for United to part ways with a player who was once heralded as the future of the club following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

This is not the first time Rooney has thrown a tantrum and demanded he be allowed to leave the club. In the summer of 2010 Rooney put up a similar show and publically declared that Manchester United “lacked ambition”. The whole saga only ended when Rooney was offered a lucrative deal which made him the highest earning player at the club.

Rooney might perhaps be looking for another bumper pay rise this time around, but United cannot fall for his tantrums every time and should look forward to offload him soon.

In short, rather than selling the player to a club that will push for a league title next season, United might avoid a lot of damage if they sanction a move for Rooney outside of England which could be beneficial to all three parties involved.
